Hardcover. Condition: VG++. Dust Jacket Condition: VG++. Photos, Maps (illustrator). 1st. Bernard Freyberg was NZ's most notable military figure of WWII, but the general was also controversial with his command abilities subsequently questioned. For troops of the NZ division. which he commanded through Crete, North Africa and Italy, no such questions arose. This recent book on Freyberg VC was written with access to newly declassified war-time records which provide answers to his critics, who often overlook the impossible situations he was called on to face and the continual reshuffling of British Army senior commanders. The authors have rebalanced the record about General Freyberg in this notable battle biography, through careful analysis of three major campaigns where he played a leading role --- Crete, the "Left Hook" battle at the Mareth Line in North Africa and at Cassino. A feature of the book is the use of many photographs for the first time, taken by John White, Freyberg's personal assistant during WWII. First edition of 1989, 310 pages including notes, appendices glossary, bibliography and index. 63 b/w photos, numerous battle maps. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles VG++ with hint wear at spine base, tiny ink name top corner FFEP, text block otherwise NF. Colour art DJ, with Peter McIntyre battle portrait of the General to front, is VG++.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Art, Maps (illustrator). 1st. This "History of Te Awamutu 1884-1984" begins with a brief pre-European Maori history of the Te Awamutu area, the arrival of the first missionaries in the 1830s, before moving on to the land wars of the 1860s, which saw the township established around a militia outpost after Imperial troops withdraw when hostilities concluded. So there was much of interest before the Te Awamutu district was established in 1884, the centennial of which the book marks, with the borough council being promulgated in 1915. Following the land wars Te Awamutu soon became the centre for a prosperous and expanding agricultural area, which it remains today. Laurie Barber tells the story of the development of the town, and its district, in a readable and interesting manner, recording its highs and lows, struggles and successes and how a strong communty was created. First edition of 1984, 205 pages including seven appendices, sources/reading list and index, b/w illustrations throughout, mainly photos, some art , four maps plus e/paper maps. Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, small ink gift inscription top corner FFEP, text block otherwise NF. VG+ colour DJ has front painting by James Sanders of Waikato Mounted Rifles troops assembling in the town at the beginning of WWI.
