About this Item: Printed for J. Butterworth, London, 1810. Condition: A very good copy. Octavo, with armorial bookplate of Barron Field; contemporary calf binding with elegant blind tooling. From the library of Barron Field with his bookplate.A significant contemporary legal text and pleasing association copy from the library of one of Australia's first civilian judges, first magistrate of the Supreme Court of Van Diemen's Land and Australia's first published poet. William Ballantine, Barrister and member of the Temple Bar published this definitive text in 1810, and it would have been a significant and useful work in Field's legal library, at a time when he was working on his important Analysis of Blackstone's Commentaries (London, 1811).In May 1816 was appointed to replace J. H. Bent as judge of the Supreme Court of Civil Judicature in New South Wales. He reached Sydney next February with his newly-wedded wife Jane in the exclusively female convict transport Lord Melville. He went on to an influential career, and was heavily involved with many benevolent societies. He left Australia for England in 1824, and was later appointed to a position in Gibraltar.Barron Field's knowledge of legislative precedent and procedure allowed him to clarify thorny and ambiguous legal issues in the fledgling colony, especially those relating to the emancipation of convicts. He earnt considerable hostility for curbing the legal rights of emancipated convicts to own land, sue the Court of Justice, and give evidence at trial. A Treatise on the Statute of Limitations primarily concerns property law, with chapters on writs for asserting the right to claim property, right of entry, torts etc: issues of critical importance in the early years of the colony where ambiguity existed in the the sale and division of land. About this Item: John Murray, London, 1825. Condition: Some offsetting. Octavo, with a frontispiece, four folding maps and two botanical plates at rear; an attractive copy in later full tan calf gilt, red spine label, Bonython bookplate. First edition: one of the more important and interesting works relating to the Macquarie era. This work includes any number of essays on Australia collected during Field's residence in New South Wales from 1817 to 1824, notably the only published account of Oxley's 1823 expedition to survey the Queensland coast, along with a second narrative of the expedition by one of the participants, John Uniacke.Apart from Oxley's account of Moreton Bay, the work has several early expedition journals, including the only published account of Allan Cunningham's exploration to the Liverpool Plains, Currie's expedition to the southward of Lake George and Field's own journal of his trip across the Blue Mountains. The work is very interesting in terms of Aboriginal history for the inclusion of Oxley's report of the expedition to Moreton Bay which has important notes on the local tribes (including two chapters recounting fights Oxley had witnessed). There is also Barron Field's own meandering essay 'On the Aborigines of New Holland and Van Diemen's Land'.There are also several significant essays on natural history, the best being Cunningham's 'On the Botany of the Blue Mountains', while the botanical plates at the end illustrate four plants including Fieldia Australis (named for Barron Field). The fine frontispiece image is after a drawing by John Lewin, Australia's first professional artist. Interestingly, this work makes a perhaps surprising appearance in Abbey's Travel in Aquatint and Lithography, which is testament to the quality of Lewin's view. Seller Inventory # 4106485
