The Reverend Charles William Batt, chaplain to the diplomat James Harris (Lord Malmesbury) had died of 'putrid fever' in Oxford and this document appoints his older brother, a lawyer, to dispose of his estate. The printed document is accomplished in brown ink and has the 'seal of the Prerogative Court of the Archbishop of Canterbury' with witness signatures of Richard Cheslyn Cresswell, Doctors Commons; James Townley, Richard Dodswell and George Goslling. John Thomas Batt was a well connected late eighteenth century lawyer in Wiltshire and London whose was himself close to James Harris.
