About this Item: Alfred A. Knopf Inc, 2004. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Knopf title - "First Edition" stated is 1st printing, Signed with box # and Nairobi on front end paper then Inscribed - Signed and Dated on the half title page with a red ink full left hand print covering the bottom of these two pages pointing to the inscription, also 1/2 of a left hand palm print in black at bottom center of rear panel dj covering the bar code, the word "best" was corrected to "beast" at the bottom of page 156 in the same ink and style as the signings - though the "a" was inserted in the wrong spot between the s and t, the book was produced to look aged with false foxing stains on interior pages and the outside of the dj - I compared this to an un-signed copy I have, slightest of wear to dj, no reason to doubt the prints belonging to the author as the inscription begins very warmly "Special Delivery,". About this Item: NY: Harcourt Brave Jovanovich, 1975., 1975. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition, First Printing. Signed with Drawing by Peter Beard. Near FINE Condition. This is a signed first edition, first printing of Peter Beard's photobook "Longing for Darkness" published by Harcourt Brave Jovanovich, New York and London, in 1975. The best description of the book comes from the Peter Beard website, "In one of the most dazzling - and unlikely - books of recent times, the lost world of Isak Dinesen (Baroness Karen Blixen) is stirringly re-created by her old major-domo, Kamante, the hero of her classic Out of Africa. Here Kamante gives his version of Out of Africa (related to Peter Beard and then translated from Swahili and hanwritten by Kamante's son), his inspired rendering of the fables Isak Dinesen taught in Karen Coffee Farm School, and his lyrical watercolors. Here, too, are many never-before-published photographs from the collections of Isak Dinesen, her brother Thomas, and her great friend Denys Finch-Hatton, along with Peter Beard's superb photographic record of a world where - for perhaps the last time in history - true wilderness and true sophistication were one. "I, Kamante Gatura, was a cooker in her house. During that life with Mrs. Karen I did drive to Nairobi by way of Muthaiga and compete with the best other cooks, going to the Norfolk Hotel, the Stanley, and the Tors Hotel, and the other called Queens Hotel. We travelled the Ngong road way. By then there wernt very many constructions as there are now. We could sleep in Nairobi. Mrs. Karen had lots of welcome friends." "The first person to go to Mr. and Mrs. Barance Blixen to inquire for a shamba (a farming garden) was my father by accidents. He first went ti chief Kinyanjui and said that we were going to Ngamb-aru's Shamba. But the Shamba we were going to was of Mrs. Karen. We reached after a long journey from our old Njakai farm. And it passed like this". Kamante Gatura. Featuring 168 drawings and 160 photographs, the book measures approximately 12" x 8" and is bound in black paper covered boards with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The condition of the book is FINE with a Very Good+ dust jacket with some minor wear. The dust jacket is protected by a mylar covering. The book has been inscribed and signed by Peter Beard who has also drawn some pictures as part of the signature treatment. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 000607

About this Item: Arena Editions, Sante Fe, NM, 1999. First edition of this monograph. Quarto, original leatherette cover. illustrated throughout. Elaborately signed and inscribed by Peter Beard in the year of publication, with his left hand imprint added. In fine condition. Preface by Peter T. Tunney and with an introduction by David Fahey. Essay by Anthony Haden-Guest. In this book cataloguing 50 years of Peter Beard's photography, essayist Peter Tunney offers an interesting perspective on Beard's work: "Above all, Peter Beard is a collector, the camera only one method to his madness, a mere tool for accumulating his relished subject matter, the evidence of a life lived, all stuffed into a diary, or any book for that matter. Peter once remarked to me, 'I never save a book unless I have something glued in it.'" Beard's photos are collages of lists, of reference points; when he shows in a gallery, he insists that a mixed tape of music is played to amplify and add a layer of sound to his pictures. The texture in his photo collages is rich, and the layers are thick. The elements he employs create a whole vision of his work: Africa, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, the Kennedys, elephants, Montauk, Mick Jagger, blood, crocodiles, things cut out of their context and put in new ones--the picture begins to form. Fifty years' worth of work is collected in this book, expressed in faces readers may recognize and some they won't; his adventures; and his years at Hog Ranch in Africa. Somehow these diverse points of reference come together in their differences and illustrate completely Peter Beard's fascinating work and life. Seller Inventory # 78005
