Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Beatrix Potter (illustrator). First Edition - Second Impression. From the inside jacket: This Journal, which is a remarkable document, was written by Beatrix Potter only for her own eyes. It gives a first-hand account of Victorian life in the late 19th century, and throws light on Beatrix Potter between the ages of 15 and 30, during which period comparatively little has hitherto been known. It shows how her writing matured as she passed from girlhood to woman-hood, and brings out her powers of observation, her shrewd judgement of human character, her keen sense of humour and her appreciate of nature and art. - The volume is illustrated with facsimile pages from the Journal, examples of her drawings and water colours, and photographs of the Potter family and some of the places mentioned in the Journal. There are 28 illustrations in colour and 39 in monochrome, and the volume includes Family Trees and a comprehensive index. - One of the nice things about this book, is that it is signed and dedicated by the author, Leslie Linder to Mr. P. Shaffer [who was a well known English playwright and screenwriter] - States on the first blank endpage: 'For Mr P. Shaffer. With Kind Regards - from Leslie Linder. July 11th 1966'. - Who was Leslie Linder: The legacy of Leslie Linder - Scholarly knowledge about Beatrix Potter has at its core the work of Leslie Linder, an engineer who was a collector of Potter drawings. It was Linder who, 15 years after Potter's death, succeeded in breaking and then converting the secret, miniaturised code she had used to note thoughts and observations in her diary (this journal, covering the years 1881 to 1897, was published in 1966). Linder's major collection of Beatrix Potter material was bequeathed to the Victoria & Albert Museum [London - UK] after his death in 1973. - Beginning at age 14, Beatrix Potter kept a coded journal. It would not be decoded until Leslie Linder, a superfan of the author cracked the code after 13 long years.- In 1966, the journal was published for the first time by Frederick Warne. - Condition: The original dustjacket houses this book. It retains the price to inner front prelim; 63/- NET, which was very expensive in 1966. Creasing, general soiling and several chips. I have now housed this in a removable archival sleeve. The green faux leather boards with gold gilt lettering the the spine and decoration to the front board are in a beautiful condition. The dustjacket has most certainly served this book well and kept the boards immaculate. Page block is tight. End-pages are of a lightly mottled blue/gray colour and apart from the Leslie Linder dedication to the front, the end pages are in a beautifully clean condition. This is a heavy book with 448 pages and it is lavishly illustrated with drawings and photographs, it really is a beautiful work. Few areas of spotting and foxing. - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest. - OPEN TO REASONABLE OFFERS. Signed by Author(s).

First edition. Original cloth backed glazed pictorial boards. A good copy, with some wear to the corners and spine a sizeable chip torn from the corner of the front end paper. Internally fresh and clean. Tipped in chromolithograph frontispiece and numerous black and white illustrations throughout by various artists including Beatrix Potter, Louis Wain, and W. Foster. The most significant contribution is nine line drawings by Beatrix Potter (signed HBP) to accompany a verse entitled "A frog he would a fishing go". There is also a full page black and white image after a pen and gouache drawing by Potter, to accompany "The Story of Violante and the Silver Sixpence". These illustrations, which had their genesis in a picture letter to Eric Moore of September 1893, were offered (and after some horse trading, sold) to Nister in 1894. Potter had hoped Nister would publish them as the contents of a small booklet, but Robert Mack of Nister had replied that, "people do not want frogs now. The only way we could use it would be as a double page in our 'Annual'.". The illustrations duly appeared occupying three pages accompanying the verse "A Frog he would a fishing go", by another author. In due course Potter bought back the copyright (and blocks) for the illustrations and developed them to be published in 1906 as The Tale of Jeremy Fisher. The separate full page image depicts two young kittens looking in a shop window being watched by the shop keeper, knitting in the doorway, over which is the sign, "Squintina Tabby / Licensed to sell / Tea". The image carries the caption "What shall we Buy?". Leslie Linder's The History of the Writings of Beatrix Potter shows a rough sketch of the old tabby (facing p.179), noting that it was "for a picture sold to Ernest Nister". An original version of this image was sold as part of the property of Bertram Potter at Sotheby's July 2008. Comical Customers is now extremely scarce. Cotson (Potter) 562;

Hard Cover. INSCRIBED U.S. FIRST EDITION (preceding the U.K. First Edition). Octavo, pp. 225, [1]. Six colour plates including frontispiece, plus numerous line drawings within text including head- and tail-pieces and full page illustrations. Publisher's bottle green cloth with gilt titles and decoration to spine with printed title onlay illustrated in colour to upper board. Housed in a custom-made black morocco silk-lined clam-shell box, with gilt titles and decoration to upper. Cover cloth stained to lower board, gilt dulled; minor wear to spine tips and corners; onlay slightly scuffed but bright. Ownership name & address to front paste-down. Boldly inscribed to title page "Copyright of the Author in Great Britain witheld, entered at Stationers Hall" in Beatrix Potter's hand, and "Philadelphia" crossed through by her in the publisher's imprint. Inner margin p. 108/9 creased otherwise contents clean. A Very Good copy in fine clam-shell box. In 1929, Beatrix Potter realised that the U.S. publication of The Fairy Caravan would leave her lacking a British copyright; so she requested that her American publisher David McKay send her 100 sets of sheets to be privately published in Britain. These were bound up by George Middleton in Ambleside in a signed limited edition of 100 copies. Its seems highly likely that in writing such an explicit inscription to the title page Ms Potter was asserting her right to the copyright and using this copy to illustrate this to her UK publisher, as well as to provide him with the text for the UK title-page.
