Fine DJ. *** "One of the most important German artists of the twentieth century, Max Beckmann was labeled a 'degenerate artist' by the Nazis and chose exile. His artistic production encompassed the realism and figural themes of his early works to the provocatively blunt portraiture, critical urban views, and richly layered symbolic works for which he is now universally recognized. Although he was a prolific writer, his written work has never before been collected and translated into English. Beckmann is known for the depth, pungency, and tremendous sensuous force of his works; only in the last twenty years have we come to learn more about his personal life. Self-Portrait in Words maps out Beckmann's life and draws attention to the occasions on or for which he produced his writings, to the importance writing had for him as a form of expression, and to both the contemporary and personal references of his ideas and images." - Publisher. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Illustrated by Max Beckmann (illustrator). Cover is white with red lettering on front and spine. Pages are clean and tight. Lavishly illustrated with 47 color and 24 b/w pictures by Beckmann. Beckmann wa born in Leipzig, Germany in 1884 and died in New York City in 1950. During his lifetime his style evolved from the impressionism of his peers to his own, singularly symbolic, rich and savagely acute style. He witnessed both World Wars, and his paintings reflect this, both as a victim and as a witness; during WWI he volunteered as a medical orderly, seeing the bloody horrors of war at first hand. Lackner, a friend and patron of Beckmann's, chose these 71 works from 835 oil paintings, drawings, prints and watercolors, to chronicle and represent Beckmann's life, from his early days, through the ever changing path of his life, up until his death in the US in the mid-20th century. Oversized. ; Crown Art Library Series; Color and B/W Illustrations; 8 1/4 x 11; 95+ pages; Cover has some light bumping and rubbing. DJ has rubbing/scuffing, edge wear, bumping, some light sunning; also has two labels from original store.
