About this Item: 1933. Longmans, Green and Co. No DW. First edition. 1933. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY, no recipient's name "With all good wishes from E. F. Benson - Lamb House: Rye. Nov. 29. 1934." The book was a prize for History and Literature awarded to Helen Newberry in September 1934 from Rye Collegiate School and has the award bookplate to the inside of the front cover. The author, who was the Mayor of Rye in 1934, signed it for her on the opposite page but without her name. We bought this item from Helen's daughter. Her mother died just recently in her 90s. Original black cloth gilt, spine faded, slightly creased and frayed at head of spine and along lower joint. Contents clean and fresh. Seller Inventory # 73656

The contents are quite superb, eps have toned otherwise the pages are clean and crisp, very tightly bound without marking or inscriptions, a superior copy like our copy of ‘The Room in the Tower’ One of the finest collection of Ghost Stories ever written, Benson was a contemporary indeed a lifelong friend of M R James, he was infact present at James's 'Chit-Chat Society' meetings where he famously read his ghost stories. Benson's collection stands very much on it's own as a masterpiece of the genre and contains ‘And the Dead Spake’, ‘The Outcast’, ‘In the Tube’, ‘Negotium Perambulans’, ‘Mr Tilly’s Séance’ and ‘Mrs Amworth’ amongst others. A superb copy of this difficult title, corners have the lightest rubbing but are still very square and sharp, the spine has uniformly dulled a shade with lightest wear to the head and foot, titles are still bright and fresh but it looks excellent, lower board as with upper has very little marking or wear, publisher’s device blind-stamped to lower board. Some light Foxing to the prelim’s and catalogue to the rear and the pages have toned which is usual for this title. No ownership/Gift inscriptions. and.
