About this Item: Ballinakella Press. Whitegate, Co. Clare. (1897) 2007 new edition. Small 8vo. Ppxviii,230. B/w photographs, bibliography. Pictorial laminated boards. Mint unread copy. Edition limited to only 750 numbered copies. "John Bickerdyke" was the pen-name of Charles Henry Cook. Tales of shooting and fishing in the West of Ireland at the end of the nineteenth century, with many passages on pike fishing, together with mentions of salmon and trout, slob trout, gillaroo and char. For this new edition the text has been entirely reset and the pictures clearly and carefully reproduced. Dr. Hugh Weir, the publisher, provides a two-page Introduction; largely a tribute to his friend, Thomas Rice Henn (1901-1974) who gave him a copy of the book together with a letter identifying many of its locations and characters. Henn wrongly named "John Bickerdyke" as Theodore Cook of Cambridge, but identified the setting of the book as Paradise Hill, Ballynacally in Co. Clare, and two of its characters as his uncle and grandfather. "Harry H is my uncle, then a Fellow of Trinity Hall, subsequently Bishop of Burnley. The Irish Judge is my grandfather, Thomas Rice Henn, Recorder of Galway and judge of the Western Circuit." Chapters include: A voyage of discovery; Moonlighters; In Clonoolia Bay; Among the Clare Hills; Brian Boru's Snipe; A Gillaroo Day; The fish that did not fail; Winter sports of the lake dwellers; Slob trout; Icebound, and a wild-goose; Commencing with yacht racing and ending with a bag of perch; Rudd versus medicine man; The forty pound pike; "Tempest toss'd". About this Item: Horace Cox. London. (1898) 1902 2nd revised edn. 8vo (145 x 217mm). Ppxii,342,ads. B/w photographs, illustrations. Blue cloth with pasted-on photograph. Inner hinge tender, sl shaken but a good copy. A comprehensive book on sea angling from boat and shore covering all of the usual disciplines, plus chapters on ocean fishing, modern improvements in fishing tackle, flyfishing in the sea, and one on "Baits cast with the fly rod," which includes sole- and gurnard-skin flies, a fly made from dog-fish tail fibres (at last, a use for them!), and flyfishing with a mouse-tail. The title of this, the 1902 revised second edition, is actually 'Practical Letters to Sea Fishers'. Reviewers of the first edition objected to the original title "on the grounds that the Author had dealt with his subject comprehensively, and in such a manner as to render his book quite as suitable for sea fishers of mature years as for the younger generation. The word "young" is therefore omitted from the title of the present edition". There are two issues of this edition. This is the second issue with "New and cheaper edition. Horace Cox. 3/6" on the spine. Seller Inventory # 3394

About this Item: Bazaar, Exchange & Mart. London. (1888) ND (c.1936) 9th edition. Small 8vo paperback (123 x 182mm). Pp86 + 2pp ads. B/w illustrations. Wrappers printed in black & white and pale blue. Price 1s. 6d. Quite used & foxed with small chip from top and bottom of spine else sound and complete. This formed part of "The book of the all-round angler", but was kept updated by later editors. "John Bickerdyke" was the pen-name of Charles Henry Cook. In the preface to this ninth edition, the editor, A. Courtney Williams, states that the book ".called for no great amount of revision except in those chapters dealing with the angler's tackle. The gear used to-day has been so enormously improved since the first edition of this book appeared that whilst following the author's ideas as far as possible it has been necessary to rewrite this section almost completely, adding observations on some of the modern day methods of catching pike (such as light casting or thread-line fishing) and omitting others which have fallen into disfavour.".
