About this Item: Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd., 2013. Softcover. Condition: New. 3rd edition. Like criticism, translation is always a text about a text and hence it is a metatext. We translate by intuition. There is no ?science of translating? though there are scientific theories of translation. In this revised and enlarged edition of A Handbook of Translation Studies, a thorough analysis of various aspects of translation studies?both in the East and the West has been made. Apart from making a background study of translation, the art of translation has been analysed as creative writing, as linguistic bridge-building and as nation building. A chapter each has been devoted to the important aspects of translation, like theory and practice of translation: the Indian context; comparative literature and translation studies: a correlation; the role of the translator; translation theories, and above all, the place of translation in the twenty-first century in the global context. This is an incisive and well researched book on translation studies in our country. In this revised and enlarged edition, a new chapter entitled ?Translator?s Dilemma: Agony or Ecstasy? has been added, while the importance of translation has been emphasized in ?Translate or Perish? The Bibliography has also been updated. The book will be useful for those concerned with translation studies in India. Contents : Preface; Acknowledgements; Translate or Perish; 1. Introduction; 2. The Diachronic Study of Translation; 3. Kinds of Translation; 4. Problems of Translation; 5. Translation as Creative Writing; 6. Translation as Linguistic Bridge-Building; 7. Translation as Nation Building; 8. The Limits of Translation; 9. The Role of the Translator; 1. Translator?s Dilemma: Agony or Ecstasy?; 11. A Critique of Translation Theories; 12. Translation Theory and Practice: The Indian Context; 13. Comparative Literature and Translation Studies: A Correlation; 14. Translation in the Twenty-First Century: The Global Context; 15. From Translation of Bhasa Literature to Comparative Literature and Nation Building; 16. Conclusion; Bibliography; Index Printed Pages: 198. Seller Inventory # 69466

About this Item: Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd, 2008. Softcover. Condition: New. Modern Indian Theatre came into being with the establishment of Sangeet Natak Akademi, the National Academy of Music and Dance Drama and the National School of Drama in the 195s and ?6s. The best known four playwrights?Mohan Rakesh, Girish Karnad, Badal Sircar and Vijay Tendulkar?dominated the Indian Theatre for quite a long time. Mahesh Dattani appeared on the horizon in the 198s and revolutionised both Indian English play and theatre. He shot into fame with the winning of Sahitya Akademi Award for Final Solutions and Other Plays in 1998. His subsequent plays which appeared in Collected Plays in two volumes were equally well received by the readers. Mahesh Dattani?s plays are set in contemporary society. He has examined issues of gender inequality, social exclusion, fundamentalism and the impact of dreaded disease HIV/AIDS on people?s mind. What distinguishes him from other playwrights is his courage of conviction in depicting the innovative themes like portrayal of sex preferences by men and women which were until recently considered to be a taboo in Indian society. His realistic portrayal of human nature evokes both sympathy and empathy in the minds of readers. The book analyses with insight and precision various themes in Dattani?s plays. As drama is a performing art, it also highlights his techniques of stage production. It will be useful to students, teachers and researchers in Indian English plays and those concerned with stage craft.Acknowledgements; Preface; 1. Introduction; 2. Themes in Mahesh Dattani?s Plays; 3. Portrayal of Family in Mahesh Dattani?s Plays; 4. Social Exclusion in Mahesh Dattani?s Plays; 5. Critical Approaches to Mahesh Dattani?s Plays; 6. About this Item: Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd, 2008. Softcover. Condition: New. Modern Indian Theatre came into being with the establishment of Sangeet Natak Akademi, the National Academy of Music and Dance Drama and the National School of Drama in the 195s and ’6s. The best known four playwrightsâ€"Mohan Rakesh, Girish Karnad, Badal Sircar and Vijay Tendulkarâ€"dominated the Indian Theatre for quite a long time. Mahesh Dattani’s plays are set in contemporary society. He has examined issues of gender inequality, social exclusion, fundamentalism and the impact of dreaded disease HIV/AIDS on people’s mind. What distinguishes him from other playwrights is his courage of conviction in depicting the innovative themes like portrayal of sex preferences by men and women which were until recently considered to be a taboo in Indian society. His realistic portrayal of human nature evokes both sympathy and empathy in the minds of readers. The book analyses with insight and precision various themes in Dattani’s plays. As drama is a performing art, it also highlights his techniques of stage production. It will be useful to students, teachers and researchers in Indian English plays and those concerned with stage craft.Acknowledgements; Preface; 1. Introduction; 2.
