About this Item: Edmund and George W. Blunt, January, 1842, New York:, 1842. Hardcover. Fourteenth Edition, Improved.. Good in full leather covered boards with a red leather title label, stamped in gilt, on the spine between several gilt, double ruled borders. A small quarto measuring 9 1/2" by 5 3/4" with the rear board reinforced with overlaying material resembling the cloth used in fiber glass which has eroded to such an extent that much of the underlying leather remains visible. There is also a 2" by 3/4" "V" shaped chip from the front board at the middle of the front joint. Despite these problems the binding remains tight and strong with no missing or loose pages. The preliminaries and up through about page 70 show mild dampness staining in the margins. 684 pages followed by an appendix dated May, 1843, and an additional appendix dated February, 1844 and the update for August, 1845 is glued to the verso of the formerly listed page; all of which is followed by a two page ad from the publisher. Illustrated with all listed charts (eleven of which fold-out) plus an unlisted chart of Little Egg Harbour facing page 209. The errata slip is tipped-in at page 675. Of interest is a small, blue book plate pasted to the front paste down reading: "Erasums A. Kutz, | Manufacturer & Importer | of Mathematical Instruments | Corner of Burling Slip (?) & Water St. | New York.". Seller Inventory # TB28157

About this Item: Published Annually for W. Hooker, 202 Water Street, New York. New York. April, 1819., 1819. Soft cover. Condition: Good. 10 (of 12), 166, [14] pp. A rare almanac. According to an advertisement appearing in this almanac, the series began with an almanac for 1811; apparently it was issued annually through about 1840. The almanac is derived from an English edition of the same, although Blunt points out "[n]eglect and inattention to the important task are visible in the English edition." To emphasize the value of the American edition, there is a four-page listing of the errors corrected in the American edition. Many interesting advertisements are included, several with illustrations (such as William Mandeville, Cabinet Maker). Other advertisements are for maps -- a proposal by Thomas Lay for a revised edition of his map of the State of New York and a listing of charts available from William Hooker (Bahama Bank, Blunt's Chart of Long Island Sound, etc.). In several places, the name and initials of W.H. Allen, U.S.N. are inscribed in ink in this copy. (Quite possibly this is Lt. William H. Allen, commander of the Alligator, who was killed in an engagement with pirates in the West Indies in 1822.) No copies of any year of this series appear in auction records of the past two decades. Not in Drake. (For the years 1811-1821, Drake locates only 1 copy of the 1812 edition.) Shaw & Shoemaker: 48823. (MWA only.) No non-microform copies located on OCLC. String tied. Printed wrappers, heavily soiled and chipped; spine lacking. Chip to front wrapper with no loss; loss of approximately 1" at foot of rear wrapper. Ffep torn with corner missing; rear free end paper lacking. Lacks the third printed leaf. Loss of a few words at the foot of the final leaf. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 2595

About this Item: Newburyport: Edmund M. Blunt., 1804. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Later cloth. 8vo. 386pp, 6pp ads. Fourth edition. Illustrated with 11 charts (2 folding). Collated and complete with "Directions to the Binder" leaf. A rare edition of Blunt's "American Coast Pilot", the first book of American sailing directions published in the United States. The author was nominally Captain Lawrence Furlong, a prominent Massachusetts ship captain, but Blunt was the primary author, using Furlong's name to gain credibility for his work. The first edition was issued in 1796 and covered the entire east coast of the United States, including the Gulf Coastal waters, Caribbean, and eastern coast of South American. It relied on verbal descriptions of sailing directions, tidetables, tables of latitudes and longitudes of principal harbors and navigational landmarks. This Fourth edition was the first to include charts. There are charts of: Portland harbor, Portsmouth harbor, Newburyport harbor, Annis Squam harbor, the Isle of Sable, Boston harbor, Newport harbor, New York harbor, the Bay and River Delaware (folding), the Bay of Chesapeake (folding), and Charleston harbor. In terms of condition this is a good to very good copy with some heavy browning to portions of the text, particularly the first 130 pages preceding the first chart. The charts are in very good condition with some spotting and browning to the surface and margins. They are printed on heavy paper stock. The Boston harbor chart is a bit loose with some light chipping to the right edge and a small fold to the bottom corner. The other charts are free of any chips or tears. The page of text between the Isle of Sable and Boston charts is torn at the right side but complete. HOWES F-421; SABIN 26219. Seller Inventory # 6148
