About this Item: Nürnberg: [Homann's Heirs], 1776., 1776. Oblong folio (21 2/8 x 24 6/8 inches). Engraved title-page and index. One original manuscript map of Prague in ink and colour wash, and 32 engraved maps of which 15 are from the "Atlas regni Bohemiae", including 2 folding, all except one with original hand-colour in part, one without colour (some maps with handwritten numbers in upper corner, some toning). Contemporary half calf, marbled paper boards, gilt (extremities a bit worn). Provenance: The noble family von Celsing, Biby, Södermanland, Sweden, by reputation. Part of the Hapsburg monarchy form 1526, many attempts had been made by nationalist parties to return Bohemia to independence. The maps from the "Atlas regni Bohemiae" were published towards the end of the 18th-century, after the Bohemian Diet approved administrative reform in 1749, including the indivisibility of the Habsburg Empire and the centralization of rule, and the merging of the Royal Bohemian Chancellery with the Austrian Chancellery, but before the Czech National Revival movement, in cooperation with part of the Bohemian aristocracy, started a campaign for restoration of the kingdom's historic rights, whereby the Czech language was to replace German as the language of administration. The enlightened absolutism of Joseph II (Holy Roman Emperor from 1765 to 1790 and ruler of the Habsburg lands from 1780 to 1790) and his successor Leopold II, who introduced minor language concessions, showed promise for the Czech movement, but many of these reforms were later rescinded. This extensive atlas of Prague and Bohemia includes the following maps mostly issued by Homann's heirs: Regni Bohemiae, duc Silesiae. / Carte des états de Boheme. 1747; Nova totius regni Boemiae tabula, engraved by J. L. Blanck (uncolured, early repairs to verso); Bohemiae regnum in xii circulus divisum. / Le royaume de Boheme.
