A Very Good copy. **** Oval bust length portrait of Lincoln, engraved by John Chester Buttre based on a photograph of Lincoln by Matthew Brady, with intricate border engraving by W. Momberger showing symbolic depictions of Patriots, Fugitives, Rebellion, and Peace at the corners, along with Lincoln's "Proclamation of Freedom" sitting atop open shackles and a broken cattail whip at the peak of the oval. The text below the Brady image of Lincoln reads, in full: "BORDER DESIGN BY W. MOMBERGER". "Entered according to act of Congress AD 1864 by J.C. Buttre, in the Clerk's Office in the District Court of the Southern District of New York. ENGRAVED AND PUBLISHED BY J. C. BUTTRE 48 FRANKLIN STREET NEW YORK. PHOTOGRAPH BY M. B. BRADY". Not examined out of antique frame. Lincoln's facsimile signature appears at the bottom of the piece. This engraving was reissued after Lincoln's assassination, with the assassination date printed at the bottom. A very desirable and much sought after Lincoln image. Very Good.
