Paperback. Condition: New. "Michaël Borremans may be the greatest living figurative painter." -John Vincler, The New York Times "'The Acrobat' provides an opportunity - all too rare on this side of the Atlantic - to see the genius of Borremans in the flesh. It's painterly magic. A major New York museum retrospective is long overdue." -John Vincler, The New York Times Recalling classical painting, both through technical mastery and choice in subject matter, Borremans's depictions of the surprising and the bizarre invites a second look. Uncanny scenes of figures looking at blurred acrobatic displays, hooded subjects rendered in Rembrandt-esque lighting, or solemn portraits demonstrate Borremans's unique vision. In this recent body of work, Borremans continues to draw the viewer in closer with his intimately scaled paintings of mysterious figures in peculiar arenas. Accessible yet full of rich detail, this pocket-size book features fifteen masterful works offering a mystifying narrative. An illuminating text by Katya Tylevich mines the scenes Borremans sets, conjuring the multidimensionality of the works' emotional power and their unique place in the lineage of art history.

Not simply a textual complement to the exhibition but also an unusual combine of art works, this book is much more than just a documentation of an exhibition, it's an exhibition in book form. In spite of its classical design and hardcover binding, it is an artists' book with a truly unusual use of texts and reprints. The book will also feature sections with visual reminders and references for all of the 4th berlin biennial activities including Checkpoint Charley, Gagosian Gallery in Berlin, and the columns presented by the bb4 in Zitty magazine." -- publisher's statement. Hardcover. Condition: gut. 2005. Ausstellungen: S.M.A.K., Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Gent 5.2.-10.4.2005 Parasol Unit, London 3.5.-30.6.2005 The Royal Hibernian Academy, Gallagher Gallery, Dublin 14.7.-4.9.2005 If you are a lover of painting and art books, this first work on Belgian artist Michael Borremans is well worth adding to your collection. I think Borremans has something quite new to bring to the figurative tradition. His subtle, subdued, gorgeous works seem to come from the 1930s or 40s, yet they express the anxiety of our era. The book is small, just 9.75 x 6 inches, so the reproductions are small too. Most are well-presented, though the color on some looks iffy. Some works have been enlarged to cross the gutter, which can be frustrating. But this is still a painter worth getting to know, and thus the book is worth it. A decade from now you'll be glad that you have this first book on the artist on your shelf. Borremans's Zeichnungen/Tekeningen/Drawings is an excellent book, but it's harder to get and his drawings are quite different from the paintings. I recommend both books.
