Add to basketFirst edition, first impression, association copy, with a contemporary gift inscription on the title page from Lady Wentworth (1873-1957), the owner of the Crabbet Arabian Stud and one of the most consequential English horse breeders of the 20th century. Crabbet Arabians have strengthened every major breeding subdivision and have sired numerous world champions. Today, pure-bloodline stallions are highly coveted. Her inscription, to an untraced recipient, reads: "G. Walder from Wentworth". She presided over the family's famous stud from 1920 to 1957 and wrote several books on Arabian horses. "As a breeder she probably had few equals; she combined a voluminous knowledge of pedigree with a keen eye for a horse and the means to breed on a big scale, and she had a certain flair or instinct which transcends scientific calculations" (obituary in The Times). In his retirement, the author (1831-1916) founded Australia's first Arabian farm at Quambi Springs, near Mount Barker, Adelaide, in 1891, using stallions imported from the Wentworth stud. Wentworth's father, Wilfred Scawan Blunt, is acknowledged in the preface as the most experienced English breeder of Arabian horses, and page 213 praises the purity and breed of his sires. Provenance: Emanuel Hutchins,Chief Veterinary Officer of the Uganda Protectorate, with his Mbale, 26 June 1910 ownership inscription on the front free endpaper. Hutchins was appointed in 1909, introducing important measures to combat rinderpest in the region. Copies are also known in a red cloth binding with the publisher given as "Gay & Hancock" at the foot of the spine. Both Gay & Bird and Gay & Hancock were operational in the early 20th century and the relationship between the two entities is yet to be clearly established. Octavo. Tissue-guarded half-tone frontispiece after a painting of Queen Victoria's favourite Arab horse, 7 similar plates, line drawing of average thoroughbred heights in text. Original green diagonally ribbed cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. Near-contemporary ink and pencilled on rear blank and free endpaper. Extremities rubbed and bumped, top edge dusty, front inner hinge tender, light foxing internally, more so to first and last few leaves: a very good copy.
