Reprint Edition. Hardbound small 8vo (about 7.5 inches tall) 322 pages. Description: Dust jacket art by W A Smith. Publisher's Book number 214 . Tawny-haired Valeria Peyton, with her Down-East conscience and romantic dreams of the West, arrived in the desolate little cow town of Hope to marry Manley Fleetwood. He was not there to meet her and in his stead was taciturn Kent Burnett, cowhand, with evasive excuses. When Manley did show up, they were married, and Valeria struggles to adjust to life in a forlorn shack far out in the lonesome prairie. In addition to these hardships, she eventually realizes she is married to a drunken weakling. Rising above her disgust, she tries to help him. Then disaster arrives in the form of a deadly prairie fire. In the aftermath she discovers to her further horror that her husband had taken up rustling, and she finally decides to leave him. But it is not as simple as it should be. BINDING/CONDITION: brown cloth with black vignette and spine text; as is common with books from this publisher, the paper is browning; a Good book, with a Good dust jacket; the jacket spine is faded. Hardcover. Condition: Good. W. Herbert Dunton (illustrator). 1st Edition. Red cloth hardcover boards with stamped illustrated cover with black lettering. Illustrated.Boards with light wear and soiling; spine sunned; pages dusty with light age toning. Bertha Muzzy Sinclair (1871 ? 1940), best known by her pseudonym B. M. Bower, was an American author who wrote novels, fictional short stories, and screenplays about the American Old West. Her works, featuring cowboys and cows of the Flying U Ranch in Montana, reflected "an interest in ranch life, the use of working cowboys as main characters (even in romantic plots), the occasional appearance of eastern types for the sake of contrast, a sense of western geography as simultaneously harsh and grand, and a good deal of factual attention to such matters as cattle branding and bronc busting.
