This is a Special Double Issue Commemorating The Bicentennial of the Federal Government's Arrival. The Historical Society of Washington, D.C. (named The Columbia Historical Society until 1988) is an educational foundation and museum dedicated to preserving and displaying the history of Washington, D.C. The society provides lectures, exhibits, classes, community events, and other educational programs as part of its mission. In addition, the society's Kiplinger Research Library houses a collection of books, maps, photographs, and other materials relevant to the history of the city. In 1989 the Society announced its new name: The Historical Society of Washington, D.C. The Society announced the name change with the first issue of Washington History, a semi-annual magazine that continued the publishing traditions of the Records in a new format. Among the numerous articles is one entitled :Queen Dolley" Saves Washington City by Catherine Allgor that focuses on the tribulations of 1814 when the British burned parts of Washington City, and Dolley Madison, according to legend stood 'in the smoking ruins of the White House, proclaiming "We shall rebuild.the enemy cannot frighten a free people." Further, she insisted that sine the Founding Fathers has chosen this location for the capital, there is should stay. Other articles addressed the War Office fire, Monuments, Nation-building, Diplomats, Slavery, Catholic Church, Women, and Boardinghouses. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.

Wraps. Condition: Very good. 26 cm, 140 pages. Wraps. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Washington History is the only scholarly journal devoted exclusively to the history of our nation's capital. Started in 1989, the journal replaced the original Records of the Columbia Historical Society, printed since 1897. Washington History is filled with scholarly articles, reviews, and a rich array of images and is written and edited by distinguished historians and journalists. Each year, the Historical Society published two issues of Washington History. Encouraging research on the history of Washington, D.C. is one of the Society's goals. For Washington History this bicentennial had been a magnet, drawing together research on the history of early Washington that had been in progress for several years. The articles in this special issue explode myths, offer new insights and interpretations, and gather previously scattered information and images that were intended to make this special bicentennial issue a central reference on the early history of the city.
