About this Item: Louis Charles Desnos, Paris, 1761. unbound. Copper plate engraving with original hand color. Image measure 15" x 21.5" This impressive chart by Desnos and Brion de la Tour depicts the astronomical model developed by Nicolaus Copernicus. The Copernican Heliocentrism shows a stationary Sun at the center of the Universe with all the planets rotating around it. The Copernicus model is believed to have given birth to modern astronomy as it departed from the prevailing Ptolemaic system, which for centuries placed the Earth at the center. The whole is surrounded by text with remarks and descriptions of the map and enclosed in a decorative border which was only added to the deluxe editions of his atlas. The map is in good condition with minor wear and creasing along the centerfold. Centerfold split at bottom, not affecting printed image. Original plate mark is visible. Louis Charles Desnos (1725 - 1805) was a cartographer and globe maker from Paris, France. He was the Royal Globe Maker for the Kind of Denmark, Christian VII, and published a large number of maps during his time. Louis Brion de la Tour (1756-1823) is best known for his 'Atlas General' published in collaboration with Louis Charles Desnos. He held the title of Royal Cartographer to the King of France. This is an uncommon example of their collaborative work. Seller Inventory # 269935

About this Item: Grangé, Guillyn, Desnos, Paris, 1765. Condition: Some preliminary foxing. Quarto, numerous engraved maps and charts (see below); an attractive copy in contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt with crimson morocco label. An innovative eighteenth century atlas founded upon enlightenment principles, combining geographical and social information using novel methods. The atlas is the work of two eminent cartographers of the mid-eighteenth century, Royal geographer Louis Brion de la Tour and Parisian publisher Louis Charles Desnos. A wide range of statistical information - relating to the population, finances, and government of France - is here presented in inter-related charts and maps. The product is an atlas that expands beyond regular geography, so fulfilling the enlightenment ideal of joining diverse streams of knowledge into a lucid whole. The atlas was first published in 1763. This is an example of the significantly expanded later edition of 1766, containing a good number of maps not present in the first edition. New material includes the final section of road maps, tabulated for real-time use by travelers. In this revised edition the atlas is comprised of several discrete parts, each with engraved title pages. A full contents listing as follows:Introductory letterpress: title-page reading 'Coup d'oeil général sur la France', [16][4]pp.'Tableau analytique de la France?' engraved title, 33 plates (one large folding, remainder double-page).'Le petit Neptune François' engraved title, 3 double page plates of coastal districts, followed by large folding map captioned "La France divisée en ses LVIII provinces"'L'indicateur fidéle ou Guide de Voyageurs' engraved title, double-page ornamental dedication to Cassini de Thury, followed by 19 maps and charts; followed by letterpress prospectus and both alphabetic place names supplements (paginated 8,10pp.). About this Item: Paris, Grange, Guillyn, Desnos, Paris, 1765. Full-Leather. Condition: Fine. 54 Hand Colored Maps (illustrator). Later Printing of the First Edition. RARE ATLAS of FRANCE. A later printing of the 1765 first edition. Although the title page still says 1765, this has three maps not in the first edition as well as a Gravure double a Monsiere Cassini de Thury Seigneur de Villetaneuse. It has all the 29 analytical maps of the first edition, but 14 have been improved and are dated 1766. These maps divide France according to public and private institutions or services, various geographical and political divisions, but also military, ecclesiastical, juridical, geneaological, commencial and financial divisions. The atlas includes three coastal maps of French shoreline. Several of the analytical maps and all sea charts were drawn by Rizzi Zannoni, and the road maps by Michel, Royal geographer, both under the direction of Louis Charles Desnos. The road maps of France include the route from Amsterdam to Marseilles, the English Channel with a corner of England, and the route from Strasburg to Wienne (Vienna). There are 19 road maps, 11 redrawn from the first printing and dated 1766. Most have broad ornamental borders and all are attractively hand colored. The double page view of the Place de la Concorde in Paris is missing from this copy; there is no index but it must be assumed that it has been removed. Also missing is a double page, Le Petit Neptune Francois title, although the three coastal maps are present, and also a large folding engraved map of France by Croisey after Rizzi Zannoni. Recently bound in full dark brown calf, with blind-stamped triple filets on both boards. Red painted edges. Double silk endpapers and double fine combed endpapers. Hand sewn headbands. The original spine with raised bands and richly decorated gilt has been laid on the backstrip. Protected in a linen, conservation clamshell box. Beautifully bound by one of Canada's leading binders. Images and full description of the additional titles and texts are available on request. Seller Inventory # 009852
