In this poignant memoir, the author recounts his remarkable journey as an eleven-year-old boy, accompanying his family on an arduous six-month trek across the American wilderness in the mid-1800s. Fleeing poverty and seeking a better life, they braved treacherous conditions, hostile Native American tribes, and dwindling supplies. Through the author's vivid recollections, we witness the indomitable spirit of his mother, who led her young children through unimaginable hardships, while he discovered resilience and a profound connection to the untamed landscapes. The narrative provides a poignant glimpse into the challenges and triumphs of westward expansion, showcasing the complexities of human nature in the face of adversity. It is a testament to the power of determination and the enduring bonds of family. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good -. 1st Edition. Original brown leather, gilt lettering and ruled edge, 62 pages, including tipped-in photographic portrait, signed and dated "Elisha Brooks January 1st, 1922" by the author below his portrait, leather rubbed along hinges, chipped at head of spine, front hinge loosening, faint offsetting from the portrait, else internally bright. The "true" first edition believed to have been published in an edition of 100 copies. The introduction of the present volume praises an unnamed benefactor for providing the means to publish the volume, this benefactor is identified in the Publisher's Forward of the second edition as Clinton E. Worden. The first edition offered here is Clinton E. Worden's copy with his bookplate, dated April 1st, 1922, tipped to the front pastedown. Mostly likely a presentation copy specially bound for Worden. The book was reprinted later in 1922, under the title A Pioneer Mother Of California, and includes some corrections. Graff 412 says "The narrative describes a trip across the plains in 1852, when the author, then aged eleven years, went with his mother to join his father who had gone overland in 1850." They followed the Platte River Road to Sublette's Cutoff, and arrived at the mines near Bidwell's Bar on the Feather River, where the travel narrative ends. Streeter and Holliday owned copies of this first edition, but Graff and Norris did not. The only copy of the "true" first edition to appear at auction was in the Streeter Sale in 1968. Graff 412 2nd printing. Howes B808. Mintz 54.
