HardBack. Condition: Good. First Edition. A "new, revised" edition printed in 1823. ONLY VOLUME ONE. Marbled boards. Spine has slight tear at top. Binding is slightly loose. Title page coming loose. Pages are clean and unmarked, with little foxing. Contains numerous illustrations of "pious women". Overall in good condition.

Interesting, odd associations: each volume is signed and dated "T. Dwight Jr. | 1816," the eminent lawyer and journalist (1764-1846), brother of Timothy Dwight, cousin of Aaron Burr, and grandson of Jonathan Edwards. These books were gifted by Dr. J. M. Lyman to the Hadley Young Men's Library in 1887.

Full Calf. Condition: Good. Fourth Edition. Two volumes complete - Volume One - xv, [1], 400pp, [16] and Volume Two - [4], 394pp, [22]. Contemporary full russian calf, smooth backs divided into six panels by gilt double rules, title in gilt to second panel, volume to fourth, remaining panels with gilt volute device, covers with gilt single fillet border. Spines lightly faded, minor edge wear, outer joints rubbed, volume one with abrasion to surface of lower cover, with slight loss to leather, volume two has a chip to head of front joint. Lightly browned internally, but clean. From the library of Earl Eldon, with his name and bookplate to front pastedowns Size: 8vo.

Condition: covers detached as are the endpapers & several subsequent pages in both volumes. The covers are stained & heavily rubbed; internally, the pages are quite good and the set is certainly worthy of being rebound.

Pleasantly bound in contemporary full calf, neatly re-backed to style with original labels, gilt. Small dark stain to lower rear board of the second volume, marbled endpapers & edges. With the engraved armorial bookplates of The Right Honorable Sir Robert Peel, twice Prime Minister of Great Britain. Vg. [Horne 390; Lowndes 313; Congregational Lib. Cat. II, 71].

Two large volumes, both have scuffs and wear to the tops and bottoms of the spineThe covers are embossed with a diamond pattern, the spines have gilt decoration with the title and volume number in gilt on black leather. Volume one has a creased front free page. There are a number of inked names and dates on a further two front free pages. Volume two also has a creased front free page with marks on the inside front cover. Both volumes are generally clean and well illustrated.
