Seine Lehrjahre verbrachte er bei zur weitverzweigten Tietz-Familie gehörenden Kaufleuten in Prenzlau, Stralsund und Berlin. Eine eigene Geschäftsidee führte ihn nach Gera, wo er zusammen mit seinem Onkel Hermann Tietz 1882 seinen ersten Groß- und Einzelhandel für Weiß- und Korbwaren eröffnete. Das Sortiment wurde zügig erweitert, Filialen kamen hinzu. 1884 wurde das erste Warenhaus der Firma 'Hermann Tietz' in München am Stachus gegründet. Hier konnten bald auf fünf Stockwerken in elf Abteilungen Waren aller Art angeboten werden. Nach modernen Verkaufsprinzipien baute der Visionär und Stratege Oscar Tietz ab 1900 eine Warenhauskette in Berlin auf, mit den bekannten Häusern in der Leipziger Straße, am Alexanderplatz und in der Frankfurter Allee.Nils Busch-Petersen schildert, wie die inzwischen weltbekannte Firma 'Hermann Tietz' zum größten europäischen Warenhauskonzern in Privatbesitz wurde, Volkswarenhäuser mit sehr günstigen Preisen betrieb, für die Durchsetzung ganzer Warengruppen sorgte, an der Linderung der durch den Ersten Weltkrieg entstandenen Notlagen beteiligt war und die Grundlagen heutiger Kauf- und Warenhaustätigkeit gelegt hat.

August 1879 legt der Kaufmann Leonhard Tietz in Stralsund auf gerade einmal 25 Quadratmetern den Grundstein zu einem Warenhauskonzern, der bis heute unter dem Namen Galeria Kaufhof allen Krisen getrotzt hat. Tietz' Erfolgsrezept kommt einer Revolution im Einzelhandel gleich: feste Preise, Barzahlung, konkurrenzlose Tiefpreise und Umtauschrecht. Der Kunde ist begeistert und Tietz muss seinen Laden bald vergrößern. Leonhards Bruder Oscar betreibt Mitte der 1880er Jahre bereits gleichartige Handelsgeschäfte in Thüringen und Bayern. Mit dem namensgebenden Onkel legt er dort den Grundstein zum späteren Hermann Tietz-Konzern. Leonhard Tietz wählt das Rheinland für seine Geschäftsexpansion aus. Er beginnt 1889 in der Industrie-Boomstadt Elberfeld und wagt 1891 den Sprung in die Großstadt Köln. Später folgen luxuriöse Konsumtempel wie an der Düsseldorfer Königsallee und der Kölner Hohe Straße, auch heute Landmarken der deutschen Handelskultur. 1914 hinterlässt er einen Konzern mit 5.000 Angestellten und etwa 25 Häusern und Niederlassungen in ganz Europa. Seine Söhne Alfred Leonhard und Gerhardt werden 1934 von den Nationalsozialisten ins Exil gezwungen. Die Firma 'Leonhard Tietz' wird arisiert und firmiert fortan als Kaufhof AG.
