ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1980). (1980) 1980 Book Club edition. 4to (212 x 286mm). Pp160. Colour plates and illustrations throughout, bibliography. Brown boards, spine titled in gilt. Smells slightly musty, browning to edges and end-papers. Good only in rubbed and rather used dust-wrapper. This is the biography of Charles Tunnicliffe, Cheshire farmer's son and artist. Educated at the Royal College of Art, he achieved early success as an etcher and wood-engraver, illustrating many books by authors such as Henry Williamson, Alison Uttley and Negley Farson. His own books include My Country Book, Mereside Chronicle and Shorelands Summer Diary. Away from the book trade, Tunnicliffe was a wildlife artist of major importance, deservedly famous for his treatment of birds as a subject. This biography, by Tunnicliffe's friend Ian Niall, gives a detailed and affectionate account of his life and career, illustrated with a well chosen selection of his work from all stages of his career. Well informed, readable and splendidly illustrated. .

ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1980). 1980 1st edition. 4to (209 x286mm). Pp159. Colour plates and illustrations throughout, bibliography. Brown boards, spine titled in gilt to blue spine label. Minor faults, good-plus in used dust-wrapper. "This book attempts to illustrate a sample from Tunnicliffe's enormous output of work in its various facets. The superb early etchings are well represented, as are his fine wood-engravings from the late 1930s. His watercolours, which became a regular feature of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions, are reproduced in colour, together with some of his sketches and measured drawings of birds. Particularly beautiful are the marvellous oils on cloth from 1938, little known now but surely some of his most lovely pictures." .

ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1983). 1983 1st edition. Large 4to (233 x 299mm). Pp216. Colour paintings and b/w engravings throughout, bibliography, maroon end-papers. Cream boards, spine titled in gilt. Slight foxing and use, abrasions to several pages formerly adhering to one another, illustrations largely unaffected. Good in used, tape-repaired dust-wrapper. This is a good collection of illustrations presented in chrological order, illustrating Tunnicliffe's ouput as a book illustrator. Each illustration is accompanied by a short excerpt of the text which it illustrated. "This book covers the years between 1932 and 1977 when (Tunnicliffe) illustrated so many country books that in his old age he could never be sure just how many he had done. In fact, there were eighty-eight. He didn't accept every commission offered, but undertook only those books he felt he understood. .For many, black and white wood-engravings and scraperboards represent the best of Tunnicliffe's work. Their preference has been .well catered for in the present collection - because, of course, black-and-white accounted for the greater part of the artist's output as an illustrator." Chapters include: A demonstrably gifted man; A whiff of nostalgia - My Country Book; The farm scene - Both Sides of The Road; The first milestone - from A Book of Birds, to Wild Life in a Southern County (24 titles); Dreams and wonderland - from Adventuring with a Nomad, to What to Look for in Winter (14 titles); The call of the wild - Shorelands Summer Diary; Beloved country - Mereside Chronicle. .

B/w illustrations by C.F. Tunnicliffe. Black boards, spine titled in gilt. Slight use and browning, good-plus. Lacks dust-wrapper. "This book is an autobiography of the happiest days of my life. It contains the most vivid recollections I have of all the things that impressed me most and all the people I loved and worshipped, like my burly great-uncles, Charlie and Peter, my grandfather and great-grandfather, dear old Miss Dunbar and Great-Aunt Maggie .and Stewart, the man who knew horses. It is also an account of the warm summer day when my whooping-cough was cured, the day the vet operated on my poisoned foot and the days the milking-cow won a silver tea-service and the trotting-horse his last race. .It is impossible to travel in that world of Galloway as it once was and I set it down [now] to preserve its beauty as far as I am able and while I can." .

The recollections of a man whose greatest delight has been in the things he found in the open air, writes Ian Niall, are always dotted with small, almost insignificant things that were the morter of his experience. The things Niall remembers and passes on to the reader in this book, are concerned with Corncakes and Partridges, Snipe and Woodcock, Foxes Hares and Pigeons, Duck and Geese, Trout and Pike. Among these recollections are many delightful tales; of how he came to shoot his hat, of the only time his mother fired a gun and legends connected with Pike and Hares. C F Tunnicliffe's delicate yet powerful illustrations are a perfect match to this beautiful (free flowing) text. You will receive the book seen in the image. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
