Castaneda maintains his vivid sense of wonder as Don Juan escorts him into a new world of mystery and magic; he offers a crisp presentation of esoteric ideas. Taking control of one's dreams, says Don Juan, is the key to a sorcerer's power. But what kind of sorcerer? Don Juan makes a distinction between the ancients, who manipulated the world for personal power, and moderns-- such as himself-- who search for freedom. Castaneda must thread his way between these two opposing camps, balancing his thirst for truth and his personal ambition. In so doing, he passes through three gates of dreaming: becoming aware of falling asleep; waking from one dream into another; seeing yourself asleep. Castaneda passes through these portals all the while communicating with-- and being used by ' inorganic beings' that look like thin tree trunks and give the sorcerers their secret knowledge. His journey ends with a perilous confrontation with a 'death defier', a Methuselah-like male sorcerer in the guise of a woman. This copy was purchased directly from the McPhee estate in Southern Nevada. Despite the personal inscription, signature is not precisely identical to others found online -- buyers may want to make their own comparisons. Clipping of Robert Kirsh's review from the Jan. 7, 1975 L.A. Times laid in. Author Castaneda was a self-styled shaman and "Nagual" who claimed to be the inheritor of a sorcerer's lineage spanning 27 generations. He wrote twelve books beginning with the "Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge" (1968.) Many critics contend the books, while offering an interesting philosophy and insights derived from the use of entheogenic plant sacraments, constitute fiction. Castaneda's UCLA Ph.D. in Anthropology does not appear to be backed up by traditional documentary field notes, beyond the manuscript for his first book. Here reduced from $1,200. Signed by the author and inscribed to a previous owner, "To Jaqueline, on the day we climbed from the cellar to the attic and back to the cellar again [signed] Carlos Castaneda / Los Angeles, May 25th 1969." Bound in publisher's dark grey cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Near Fine with faint rubbing to cloth at corners, in Very Good dust jacket with price intact, sunning at and near the spine panel, edge wear with a 1.5-inch closed tear at the head of the front spine fold and light chipping. Large format apprx 12 x 17", three quarter black leather over blue cloth in near fine condition in a red, linen covered slip case that shows wear.This is NOT one of the five copies with hand colored maps on vellum. If I'm reading the Library of Congress online catalog correctly there are 28 copies of this book in libraries which would leave the other 27 in garages, attics and a few in the libraries of people with really dumb heirs.
