About this Item: Pine Studios, Fort Thomas, KY, 1976. Gilt-Stamped Cloth in Slipcase. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. First Edition. np (120pp), 52 color and 1 b&w illustration. Text in English and Chinese. Ch'i Pai-shih - now known as Qi Baishi - was born in 1864 in Hunan province. He went on to become both a renowned painter in watercolor and carver of stone seals until his death in Beijing in 1957. One of the first Chinese artists to achieve international recognition during his lifetime, his prolific output is estimated to number over ten thousand individual works. This volume is a lovely survey of his watercolors with a brief essay in English and Chinese by the noted late Chinese-born, New York-based artist and Chinese art collector Chi-Chien "C.C." Wang. An internally handsome example of the 1976 first edition LACKING its dust jacket housed in the publisher's unprinted paper over boards slipcase. Both the book and slipcase show some light soiling, and the front pastedown bears a Chinese language inscription and stamped seal - possibly that of author C.C. Wang. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. Artist Monograph. Seller Inventory # 024484

About this Item: [Beijing] 1956, [Rong Bao Zhai]. A color painted scroll, 27 x 109 cm., very clean example, silk border & edges, image is excellent, hand-painted original art work, silk ends, 2 red Qi Baishi Yin Zhang [seal/chops]. * RARE ORIGINAL PAINTING * . *** **** ***. . . A QI BAISHI COLOR PAINTED HANGING SCROLL . . . ILLUSTRATING FLOWERS & SHRIMPS . . *** This is an excellent example of QI BAISHI's stunning and classic painting. It illustrates three shrimps and flowers. . ORIGINAL SIGNED PAINTING: This original Qi Baiahi painting was brush signed, with two of his cinnabar [red] Yin Zhang [chops/seals] in upper right and lower left corner. . Qi worked at the studio, painting a good number of his original classic examples during the early 1950's until his death in 1958. . Many of his paintings were then carved into color woodblock prints, in the form of books, portfolios, single prints and other varieties, all sold by Rong Bao Zhai. . *** QI BAISHI [1864-1958]: CHINA'S MOST FAMOUS PAINTER OF THE MODERN PERIOD: Qi was the most eminent and most celebrated Chinese artist of the mid-20th century. . Qi became famous abroad before he was recognized, respected and adored by the Chinese. Due to his popularity abroad and China's need for hard foreign currency, he was 'enlisted' to paint and help China's faltering economy after World War II. . QI was a master of composition, color and a minimalist-Zen style artist. With a few superb brush strokes he could express his sense of humor, showing his charm and unique love of painting, nature and landscape scenery. He was later recognized as a Chinese "National Treasure," he died at age 97. . *** DATE: Per the Yin Zhang [chops/seals] used on this scroll, they were used by Qi when he was 92 years [1956], . See Lai below more details for color illustrations 1 [p.60] which cites his age as 92; color plates [opposite pp.92-93] 12, 13 for the same seal. The publisher is unknown, but one assumes Rong Bao Chai as this house did most of his works. * RONG BAO ZHAI STUDIO: Rong Bao Zhai Studio, the premier house who commissioned original painted works by a group of famous contemporary Chinese artist/painters/poets. Some of these item were listed in catalogs and distributed abroad by the Beijing Guoji Shudian. See below for details. . ** GUOJI SHUDIAN DISTRIBUTION: QI Baishi's artistic production products are cited in several Guoji Shudian catalogues, stating: "This work was reproduced on rice paper, with silk mounting." This statement was in reference to the exact kind of painted scroll we offer in this listing. . . *** DATE: Per the Yin Zhang [chops/seals] on this painting, Qi carved and used this at age 92, or 1956. See Lai below. . *** CONDITION: The scroll is in the original publisher's silk border, paper-backed scroll mounting, as usual the paper is a bit "toned," typical of the period. Otherwise the scroll mounting is very firm and solid, with a bit of minor edge wear and a touch of the same at the upper & lower silk mounting areas, very minimal and of no impact to the painting whatsoever. The verso has some minor reinforcements and a few mends, the work is now solid and firm. Else this is a very clean example without stains or other detractions. . There is a tiny bit of rubbing to the brocaide cloth covered scroll ends, minimal impact. . All in all, a magnificent example of Qi's charm, keen composition and painting skills. A RARE and excellent original Qi painting. . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: . China Publications Centre [Guoji Shudian]: CHINESE WOOD-BLOCK PRINTS, pp.66-69, for other examples of Shrimps very similar to our listing. Guoji was one of the major distributors of Rong Bao Zhai paintings and woodblock prints. * T.C. Lai: CH'I PAI SHIH: He cites Qi's birth date as 1863 which was what Qi stated to his biographer Chin Sung Shen. See also: color illustrations 1 [p.60] Lai cites his age as 92 when this seal was used, color plates [opposite. p.92-93] 12, 13 for the same seal. * WIKIPEDIA cites 1864 as Qi's birth date. * Boorman, Howard L. & Richard C. Howard.: CH'I PAI-SHIH. * Biographical Dictionary of Republican China I (1967): 302-304. * Chao-Wen, Wang. "An Appreciation of Chi Pai-Shih's Paintings." 126-131. Tsao, Jung Ying. * The Paintings of Xugu and Qi Baishi, pp. 5-447. * Xiangtan. "Qi Baishi [Ch'I Pai-Shi; Zi Huang; Hao Baishi Laoren, Baihi Shanweng]," pp.1-3. . *. Seller Inventory # 25009101
