Softcover. Condition: Near Fine. Another fine contribution to the series edited by Simon Brett, "Contemporary Wood Engravers." Sturdy, still tightly bound softcover copy, minor to moderate wear of covers and text-block, but with neither underlining nor highlighting. Perfectly readable, usable copy. Printed, illustrated wraps. v + 131 pp. Fine black-and-white photograph of the master woodcutter at frontis, one of his creations gracing rear panel and spine, and then 45 black-and-white plates. Complete with a chronology, a Checklist of books illustrated, and a Checklist of Wales' wood engravings. According to the co-publisher, "This is first volume in a new series of monographs, entitled CONTEMPORARY WOOD ENGRAVERS, edited by Simon Brett, that profiles those involved in wood engraving, which involves printmakers, illustrators, and those working in fine book production. The series begins with artists from Britain and the United States, and others from around the world will be introduced in due course to present an international perspective. Wales, the artist featured in this volume, made prints which were a central part of the British response to modernism and used wood engraving, when it was least popular, to do so. He was one of the very few artists who have taken the medium of illustration all the way into abstraction - the shoreline of Norfolk and his native Kent served as an inspiration, the glimmer and beauty of the sea remaining with him all of his life. Wales experienced success from the 1930s through the 1950s during the private press movement, but his later, more adventurous work was rarely seen, much less appreciated, in his lifetime. This pioneer study places his work in the context of advanced printmaking of its time and pays tribute to an artist of quiet but revolutionary integrity. Illustrated with many wood engravings by Wales.?Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

Paperback. Condition: Gebraucht. Gebraucht - Sehr gut Leichte Lagerspuren -Yoshijiro Urushibara: A Japanese printmaker in London is a catalogue raisonné of the work of Yoshijiro Urushibara (1889-1953), a Japanese artist and craftsman who lived and worked in London from 1910 to 1940. During his thirty years in Europe, Urushibara produced a considerable number of prints and played a major role in encouraging the production and appreciation of the colour woodcut in the Japanese manner, especially in Britain. Throughout his career Urushibara contributed to cross-cultural interactivity, collaborating with several European artists. His most famous and successful collaboration was with the British artist Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956).The authors had unique access to the artist's family archive in Tokyo and recorded and evaluated the extent of Urushibara's print production. With fully researched catalogue entries, full-colour illustrations, and illuminating biographical and contextual essays, this publication - the first of its kind in the English language - provides a comprehensive account of Urushibara's life and oeuvre. 208 pp. Englisch.
