Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, [98] pp. Near-Fine, with former-owner inscription. From Preface: To the motorists of to-day who skim along in beautiful high powered cars on well paved roads, with comfortable motels and convenient drive-ins every mile or two, have you ever stopped and given a thought to what the lower east coast of Florida was like before the railroad extended south of West Palm Beach? Have you ever given a thought of those pioneers of the early days who blazed "The Lonesome Road" over half a century ago? Or do you take it for granted as something that always existed? And to the travelers of to-day reclining in the luxuriously appointed streamliners with comfortable lounges and diners ever give a thought to the time when there was only one train a day? A combination passenger and freight train pulled by a wheezy wood burning engine. It would take about eighteen or twenty four hours to make the trip to Jacksonville. Every few miles we stopped to take on wood which had been piled up along the right of way, also making stops for water, hot boxes, etc. When darkness fell and the old fashioned oil lamps flickered and gleamed, so far as the eye could see, no friendly answering light in the distance or brightly illuminated town to give an encouraging greeting. We were indeed on "The Lonesome Road." Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Americana, U.S.-iana. nslic.
