A two inch area of darkening present to the upper portion of the pages in the interior, affecting the first half, with otherwise minor darkening to the interior. Twelve disbound pages laid into a card stock-backed sleeve, chipped along edges, comprising a lecture or address delivered to the Territorial Pioneers of the eventual State of California in San Francisco at the Pacific Hall. This was on the 27th anniversary of the admission of California into the Union. His Wikipedia page notes that Charles Sumner (January 6, 1811 ? March 11, 1874) "was an American lawyer, politician, and statesman who represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate from 1851 until his death in 1874. Before and during the American Civil War, he was a leading American advocate for the abolition of slavery. He chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 1861 to 1871 . . . This is Senator Sumner's response to the Trent Affair where two Confederate emissaries were removed from the British ship Trent. Sumner compares the capture of the two to the historical practice of impressment of American seamen by the British. "It cannot be forgotten that, in times past, on this identical point of law, Great Britain persistently held an opposite ground from that which she now takes." Fair copy of the soft bound booklet. Although probably never read before due to the uncut pages, there is edge wear. 13 pages.
