Seller: The Bark of the Beech Tree, Depoe Bay, OR, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Various (illustrator). New edition. First published in 1909 this is, says the Preface, the New Fifteenth Edition. The set combines poetry and prose selected from great literature, with illustrations, notes and introductory articles aimed at getting children to read and understand what they're reading. Each volume has several illustrators and they include: Lucille Enders, Herbert N Rudeen, Donn P Crane, Holling Clancy, Louis Grell, R.F. Babcock, and Mildred Lyon. Generally, all the edges are slightly browned and the extremities just slightly worn. Some volumes have had tape stuck over the front cover pastedown illustration and removing this has apparently removed some of the printing. So, here's the set book by book. Volume One: Nursery Rhymes and Folktales. Lots of Robert Louis Stevenson and Eugene Field as well as Grimm, Andersen, Perrault and Aesop. Some specks from the pastedown, but a very good copy. Volume Two: Meatier stories here, such as an edited version of The Water Babies, The King of the Golden River, The Snow Queen etc. The worse volume for loss to the pastedown with a strip ripped off down the entire picture. Volume Three: Extracts and edited versions of Robinson Crusoe, Swiss Family Robinson, Robin Hood, and some Lewis Carroll, Arabian Nights and Beowulf. Very good. Volume Four: Classic poetry from Wordsworth, Longfellow, Tennyson, etc. plus bits of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Specks of wear on pastedown, but very good. Volume Five: Some Arthurian stuff here, plus some Gulliver's Travels, Jerome K. Jerome, and Baron Munchausen. Bumped at base of spine, but very good. Volume Six: Walter Scott, Charles Dickens, Matthew Arnold, Edgar Allan Poe and Byron are amongst the contributors. This volume has been attacked by a child with a pencil - scribbles on the cover, endpapers and prelims, and a couple of pages. Otherwise OK. Volume Seven: Selections from Francis Parkman's The Oregon Trail, plus more Scott, bits of J. Fenimore Cooper, Rudyard Kipling, and Thoreau. Excellent copy. Volume Eight: A brave attempt to get children to read Shakespeare. The Tempest is presented with plenty of helpful footnotes and cleverly preceded by the Lamb's version. There's also more Poe, some Washington Irving and Robert Southey. A spot of wear on pastedown, but very good. Volume Nine: A taste of Stevenson's Travels with a Donkey, more Poe and Dickens, some Francis Bacon, Robert Browning and Gilbert White. Very good. Volume Ten is The Guide. There's a strip ripped off across the pastedown, but otherwise a very good copy. All in all, an OK set of this excellent guide through the best of the world's literature. Be warned - Media Mail shipping on this heavy set is going to be around $23.
