The book has uneven aging to the top and bottom edges of both covers, mild shelfwear to the edges and corners of the covers, a slightly shifted spine, loose hinges, and an overall gentle aging to the pages, otherwise this book is in good condition with crisp, unmarked pages, a tight binding, and charming illustrations throughout. The dustjacket has a significant tear at the top edge of the jacket approx 2 inches long near the spine and extending approx 2 inches across the front cover, shelfwear to the edges and corners of the jacket resulting in multiple tears and creases most notable at the top edge of the jacket, both corners clipped from the front flap of the jacket, and smudging to the back cover, otherwise the dustjacket is in fair condition and is in a protedctive mylar cover.

An historical novel about 19th Century Japan; George Turner Marsh was an Australian-born entrepreneur who lived in Japan for four years in the 1870s and, with a partner, opened two Japanese import shops in San Francisco in 1876. San Francisco's Richmond district is named after the house he built in that neighborhood. Significant Japanese-American artist Chiura Obata (1885-1975) contributed vignette sketches that introduce each chapter.
