Quartos. 10.5" x 8" Charles Cowden Clarke was an educator, writer, and Shakespearean scholar. He is best known for his lectures on Shakespeare and other literary figures, which helped introduce many people to Shakespeare's works and their themes. Mary Cowden Clarke is remembered as the first woman to edit a complete edition of Shakespeare's plays. Front hinges cracked, but holding strong, light general wear and rubbing. Overall a very good or better set. Half tan polished calf over grey moire boards, fountain patterned endpapers, all edges marbled.

Gilt decorated red publisher's leather with raised bands and gilt lettering and decoration to the spines; marbled endpapers, gilt-decorated turn-ins and a.e.g. Rubbing to extremities, with very slight scratching to boards. Two ink inscriptions, with dates of 1880 and 1966 to prelims. Foxing scattered throughout both volumes. Mary Cowden Clarke was a compiler of a concordance to Shakespeare and her husband Charles gave a series of lectures on the playwright. Large 8vo.
