ABOUT: He's become a household name: Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., the brilliant orator and legal strategist who captained the Dream Team in the trial of the century. But behind the man the media created is a story of a life spent in the trenches of the American legal system, fighting not for clients as high-profile as O. J. Simpson, but for individuals whose voices are too often silenced. Journey to Justice is an unflinching portrait of Johnnie Cochran and the legal system that he has so profoundly influenced. It will forever change our understanding of what works and what doesn't in America's most noble and troubling institution. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition with Number Line to 1. Signed and inscribed on the half-title page ( 'To _________, All The Best!, Johnnie Cochran 6/10/03.'). As you can see from the photos, the covers are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The edges and corners are in solid shape. The front cover does bow out (rather than lie flat) but the book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. These pages are exceptionally clean. I scrolled through them several times without finding any soiling. I'm also not seeing any creasing at all (although they have a little bit of a swerve). There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The dust jacket is in excellent shape. It is clean. There are no tears. The flaps are in very good shape. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. Inscribed by Author(s).

Paperback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: fine. First edition of Journey to Justice by lawyer and civil rights activist Johnnie Cochran, inscribed to U.S. Ambassador Edward J. Perkins. (illustrator). First Trade Edition, First Printing. Small octavo, ix, 373pp. Paperback. Stated "First Mass Market Edition: November 1997" on copyright page with full number line. Solid text block, a fine example. Inscribed by the author on verso of front cover: "To Ambassador Edward J. Perkins / You are indeed a national treasure. We appreciate and value you. May God continue to Bless and Keep you!" Dr. Edward J. Perkins (1928-2020) served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, as well as Liberia, South Africa, and Australia throughout his 25-year foreign service career. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan appointed Perkins to serve as ambassador to South Africa in hopes of fending off a congressional override to his veto of economic sanctions against the country. It was a controversial decision amidst apartheid in South Africa, and many Black leaders urged Perkins to not take the role. Perkins accepted the position and served until 1989, one year before Nelson Mandela was released from prison. He was appointed U.N. Ambassador by George H.W. Bush in 1992, serving for one year.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Two books related to the OJ Simpson trial, association copies, both inscribed to Joan Didion and her husband the writer John Gregory Dunne. Dunne reported at length on the OJ Simpson trial himself for *The New York Review of Books.* The first is *The Run of His Life* by Jeffrey Toobin, inscribed in the year of publication on the half title page: "September 1996, For Joan + John --In friendship and enduring admiration, Jeff Toobin." The second is *Journey to Justice* by Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., who led OJ's "Dream Team," written with Tim Rutten. It's Rutten who's left the inscription: "For Joan and John -- With gratitude, admiration, and love. For: 'I am in despair that time may bring approved pattern of women & of men. But not that selfsame excellence again.' Fondly, Tim (and W.B. Yeats) II.VII.IXVII [i.e. 2/7/1997]." A great pairing for the true crime or Los Angeles collector. Toobin broke the story for *The New Yorker* that Cochrane and his team would argue that LAPD had planted evidence, and *The Run for his Life* was turned into a mini-series. Tim Rutten was a journalist for 40 years with *The Los Angeles Times.* *The Run of His Life* is very good due to a slightly cocked spine; otherwise fine in a fine jacket. *Journey to Justice* is fine in a very near fine jacket with light edge wear. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We also have a distinct interest in contemporary essay and invite you to explore our other Joan Didion offerings.
