First Edition
Cloth. Condition: Very Good Minus. No Jacket. Nate Collier (illustrator). First Edition Thus. About Very Good, lacking the dustjacket. gilt lettering at spine dulled and barely legible, cloth rubbed at the tips, prior owner name front endpage, faint erasures rear pastedown. From the personal library of Will H. Hays, with a tipped in single page yellow typing paper, dated Jan. 14, 1947, titled "References to WILL H. HAYS and Topics of interest in "Illiterate Digest" by Will Rogers". Pencil underlining and marginal checkmarks on pages referenced. Obviously a copy that was well read and referenced by Hays, who managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position, he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire, inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts, and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. When the Catholic Church formed its Legion of Decency and threatened nationwide boycotts of movies, Hays installed a more formal production code, called the Hays Code( later simply "The Code"), which became the virtual law of Hollywood until the 1960s. Book.

First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Nate Collier (illustrator). First Edition. Decorated green and white boards lettered in black. Illustrated with a frontispiece of Rogers. The great American humorist's take on Prohibition. SIGNED "Will Rogers" with the notation "Sincerely yours" by the author on the front endpaper. Rogers was born in Indian Territory in 1879 and had some Native American blood in his veins. He began in vaudeville and moved on to motion pictures, a career that was cut short when he died in a small plane crash in 1935 near Point Barrow, Alaska. Perhaps he was best known, however, for his syndicated newspaper column which had such a massive following that the proposition that he run for President was once seriously advanced. His saying, "All I know is what I read in the newspapers," became a popular catchword of the times. Books signed or inscribed by this most popular of American humorists and member of the Cherokee Nation are uncommon. Light wear to the corners and the tips of the spine which is sunned. Very Good, lacking a dustwrapper.
