Woolsey was born on January 29, 1835, into the wealthy, influential New England Dwight family, in Cleveland, Ohio. Her father was John Mumford Woolsey (1796-1870) and her mother Jane Andrews, and author and poet Gamel Woolsey was her niece. Her family moved to New Haven Connecticut in 1852. Woolsey worked as a nurse during the American Civil War (1861-1865), after which she started to write. She never married, and resided at her family home in Newport, Rhode Island, until her death. She edited "The Autobiography and Correspondence of Mrs. Delaney" (1879) and "The Diary and Letters of Frances Burney" (1880). She is best known for her classic children's novel "What Katy Did" (1872). The fictional Carr family was modeled after her own, with Katy Carr inspired by Woolsey herself. The brothers and sisters were modeled on her four younger siblings: Jane Andrews Woolsey, born Oct 25, 1836, who married Reverend Henry Albert Yardley; Elizabeth Dwight Woolsey, born Apr 24, 1838, who married Daniel Coit Gilman and died in 1910; Theodora Walton Woolsey, born Sep 7, 1840; and William Walton Woolsey, born Jul 18, 1842, who married Catherine Buckingham Convers, daughter of Charles Cleveland Convers.' Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. What Katy did at School- What Katy Did Next-two books in one- Sarah Chauncey Woolsey was an American children's author who wrote under the pen name Susan Coolidge. A name and date on the end page otherwise this is an unmarked copy. Moderate wear to the price clipped Jacket.-Illustrated-" What Katy Did at School is a sequel to "What Katy Did", and written a year later, in 1873. Like many girls, I read and enjoyed these novels about the Carr family, written by Sarah Chauncey Woolsey, using the pen name Susan Coolidge. The style and concerns are rather like those of "Little Women", the 1868 novel by Louisa May Alcott. Interestingly, both authors heightened the realism in their novels by drawing on their own childhood memories. The book starts immediately after the conclusion of the first novel, when Katy has recovered from the accident that had confined her to her room for four years. Life, in the fictional Ohio lakeside town of Burnet, has returned to normality. The only drawback is the sultry weather, not typical for September. It seemed: "determined to show that he knew how to make himself just as disagreeable as August, if only he chose to do so." A constant yellow dust in the air, "made the sunshine look thick and hot . A few bright leaves appeared on the trees, but they were wrinkled and of an ugly colour ? boiled red like lobsters". Even the wind: "seemed to have passed over some great furnace which had burned out of it all life and flavour". After the feverishly heat-dazed Autumn, Winter finally arrives, bringing a visit from a distant cousin, who is not at all impressed by Katy's position as the head of the household. Katy is not worried by this, until her father calls her into his study and informs her that he is sending she and her sister, Clover, away for a year. The school they are to attend is in the fictitious town of Hillsover, on the Connecticut river (based incidentally, on Hanover, in New Hampshire, home to Dartmouth College) and far to the north of their home: "as your cousin says: these home cares, which I can't take from you while you are at home, are making you old before your time." The winters there, Dr Carr says, "are pretty cold, I fancy; but the air is sure to be good and bracing. This is one thing which has inclined me to the plan. The climate is just what you need."- Jean.
