"The first two lectures in this booklet were delivered last March in Trinity College, Dublin, under the auspices of the School of Celtic Studies of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. My aims were twofold-firstly to sketch briefly the historical background to the present state of the Gaeltacht, and secondly to illustrate some of the aspects of dialect study as applied to the Irish language. The third lecture was delivered at the colloquium of the School of Celtic Studies held in October, 1949, and has been printed here as it supplements to some extent the other two. I have added as an appendix some detailed information on the state of Irish as a vernacular during the last century. . Among the various fields of Irish studies that of Irish dialects is the one above all others in which, while many of our scholars have passed leisurely hours of pastime, few have remained to dig and cultivate. The result is that, although almost a hundred years of research on Celtic languages and especially on the Irish language have passed since the time of Zeuss, we are still only in the beginning of Irish dialect study. Much work awaits us and the time is short, for the Gaeltacht is rapidly disappearing. Perhaps these lectures will help in some small measure to stimulate interest in this important field of research.". Sunning to spine and top of rear cover. Titles written in pen to the spine. Shelf wear to spine and edges. Book in excellent condition.
