The reprint, dated April 1956, examines the political, economic, industrial and agricultural strength of the Middle Island (the South Island) in the context of greater NZ at the beginning of the 1880s. It recalls the historical factors that made the SI preminant in sectrors such as agriculture, industry, population growth and the influence of the gold rushes. It reviews an important phase in NZ's development as the period under study also marked the begining of a shift of economic and industrial emphasis from South toi North.
