Einband bestoßen und lichtspurig. - The present study aims at a fairly detailed analysis of the relationship between functional psychoses (schizophrenia, manic depressive psychoses, and reactive psychoses) and migration. The study differs in many ways from most of the previous psychiatric migration studies, in objectives as well as in methodology. As in most previous studies the present investigation focuses on the relationship between migration and incidence of psychosis. By incidence is understood the frequency of new cases during a certain period of time, as opposed to prevalence, which means the frequency of new plus old cases during a certain time interval, or at a certain point of time. Incidence is chosen in the present study, as this is a better measure than prevalence for uncovering possible etiological factors. Prevalence, on the other hand, is better for estimating the actual need for treatment and care in a given population. The study aims at an analysis of all three main types of migration, namely emigration (migration between different countries), internal migration (migration within a country), and intra-city migration. As previous studies, especially concerning internal migration, are rather inconsistent in their findings, the main aim of the present study is not so much to investigate if the different types of migration and psychosis are correlated, but rather when there is a such correlation. In other words, the study aims at analyzing how the relationship between psychosis and migration is dependent on other variables such as sex, social status, civilian status, and age, as this can possibly explain the inconsistency in prior findings.
