"A New York Times Book Review Editorsâ Choice: Thereâs no right way to keep a diary, but if thereâs an entertaining way, David Sedaris seems to have masÂtered it. //ÂIf itâs navel-gazing youâre after, youâve come to the wrong place; ditto treacly self-examination. First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 280 pages. Published in 2013. The author's eighth collection of essays. One of David Sedaris' finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents David Sedaris' "Let's Explore Diabetes With Owls". His signature form, the scathing yet somehow tender "humor" essay, where the laughs are on David and also on you, as the author gradually loses his patience with America's - and humanity's - casual cruelty. "Draws on a bottomless well of appalling childhood memories revolving around his fears about being not like other boys. There's a stinging account of a swimming competition during which his own father vociferously champions his son's rival; a candid tale of his courtship of a shy African-American girl; and an unnerving confession of his inept handling of captured baby sea turtles. An acute observer and Master of the quick, excoriating takedown, Sedaris claims new territory in this exceptionally gutsy collection, creating dark monologues in other voices such as an alarming rant by a Christian Fascist. Casts penetrating light on a world of cruelty, inanity, and absurdity" (Donna Seaman). An absolute "must-have" title for David Sedaris collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen-marker on the title page by the author: "To Sam + Steph, David Sedaris". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The couple-recipients, who are named, obtained the signature in person. But that is NOT what makes this signed copy special: Because he also drew a large, menacing gun (instead of the owl he often drew on copies of this book), and in lieu of a written inscription. This title is a great collection. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy (with original gun-drawing) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have very serious flaws (because they were read) or are in subsequent printings, even if signed in both instances. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant American writers of our time. A fine copy.
