First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Woodson, Don (illustrator). First Edition. 63 Pages. Covers show some light wear to edges and corners. Interior text pages are flawless. The author was born in 1906 and always had a deep interest in history and books. Her early writings in the 1960s were radio scripts about country living. To help put her seven children through school, Dorothy cleaned houses and worked in a cafeteria. She also began tutoring children, helping and supporting more than 350. Many of her later books developed from her observations of the special needs of these children, When her youngest son left home he encouraged Dorothy to use his room to begin writing in earnest. Prior to publishing her first book, she sold 55 short stories, 37 serials and numerous articles. Her interest in assisting young people in their writing continued as she conducted workshops and spoke to more than 100,000 children in 300 schools. Dorothy was the founder of the Midwest Writers Workshop and received many honors, including an honorary doctorate from Ball State University. Her first book Anita's Choice was published when she was in her early 60s and she would write more than 30 other books before her death in 1983. Dan Woodson, illustrator of this book was excited to illustrate a Dorothy Hamilton book since his own children grew up enjoying her writings. He attributes his artistic accomplishments to Mr. Wendell E. Moore, a retired Muncie art teacher who has also illustrated Dorothy Hamilton books.
