François Duhourcau gives you the full classic account of Bernadette Soubirous ? the asthmatic miller?s daughter who went out to gather firewood, saw ?a lady? in a grotto, and never quite got her life back to normal. What?s inside (besides holy water and medical reports) You get: Childhood in grinding poverty ? damp room, bad food, worse lungs, zero expectation of ever being important. The apparitions at Massabielle ? the visions that only Bernadette sees, and the rest of Lourdes tries very hard not to believe in until things get awkward. Clergy and officials doing that timeless dance of: ?We must be prudent.? ?We must investigate.? ?We must absolutely not be wrong in public.? The emergence of the spring , the first cures, and the sudden arrival of crowds, candles and sceptical doctors. Bernadette herself, stubbornly unimpressed by fame, insisting she?s just the messenger and not remotely a plaster statue.
