Item Description: Thomas Seltzer, 1923. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Ed. 1st ed. This is a most unusual copy of the true first edition of cummings' first book--it has a signed presentation note to Eugene Delafield opposite the title page, and is signed again by cummings inside the book over the poem "Orientale." The book is in excellent condition with the spine darkened and the spine label showing wear. In the interior of the book there is a small, repaired edge tear on p. 119, amd a small offsetting mark at the top of the page gutters on pp. 114-115, where the owner undoubtedly used a piece of paper as a bookmark. Overall, however, a very nice copy, and rare to find signed--especially twice!. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 005705

The Contributors to these volumes are Rainer Maria Rilke, Randolph Bourne, Theodore Dreiser, Henry David Thoreau, Alfred Stieglitz, Andre Malraux, E. E. Cummings, Franz Kafka, Anais Nin, Charles Olson, Marcel Proust, William Carlos Williams, George Bernard Shaw, Louis Sullivan, Walter Gropius, Roger Baldwin, Muriel Rukeyser, Alvin Foote, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Havelock Ellis, Arthur Schnitzler, Thomas Mann, Ernst Toller, Angna Enters, William Saroyan, Kenneth Patchen, Albert Camus, Alfred Kazin, Sherwood Anderson, Gerturde Stein, Clifford Odetts, David Ignatow, Richard Wright, George Grosz, Henry Miller, Chiang Kai-Shek, Hart Crane, Booker T. Washington, Wright Morris, Albert Einstein, Federico Garcia Lorca, Aaron Copland, Andre Malraux, Jean Paul Satre, Simone De Beauvoir, Gandhi, Leo Tolstoy, Bertold Brecht, Carlo Levi, Stephen Spender and many others. (Twice a Year, edited by Dorothy Norman, a photographer and friend and promoter of Alfred Steiglitz, was a literary magazine with explicit political aims. Norman wrote: "Because we believe that man must be given every possible opportunity whereby he may maintain his necessary dignity and integrity Ð so that he may fulfill himself as responsible individual and as responsible member of society Ð we are printing those expressions, in Literature, in the Arts, and in the fight to safeguard and to achieve Civil Liberties that seem most effectively directed toward such ends." Contributors included most of the noted figures of the mid-20th century avant-garde, including Henry Miller, Ignazio Silone, Franz Kafka, E.E. Cummings, Stephen Spender, Marcel Proust, Anais Nin, Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, AndrŽ Malraux, William Carlos Williams, and others. The illustrations in the magazine heavily emphasized photography, featuring work by Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, among others. Some of the photographs are original silver prints from negatives, others are photogravures. Each issue also carried reports on civil liberties and artistic freedom in the United States. Hoffman in The Little Magazine said of Twice a Year that it was "within the tradition established by The Seven Arts in its attempt to achieve some synthesis of aesthetic, cultural, and social expression." It was a handsome, important magazine, difficult to find complete). Bookseller Inventory # 12619
