Er wurde schon bald aus dem Zusammenhang isoliert und uneingeschränkt als Zeugnis der humanitas verstanden, wie Zitate bei Cicero, Seneca oder Augustin lehren. So schreibt Seneca in den Briefen an Lucilius, wir seien für die Gemeinschaft geboren, die einem Bogengewölbe vergleichbar sei, dessen Steine durch gegenseitiges Stützen bewirkten, daß es nicht einstürze. Und er zitiert Terenz: Ule versus et in pectore et in ore sit: homo sum, humani nil a me alienum puto. Nicht anders ist es diesem Vers in der Neuzeit ergangen, sooft man sich auf ihn berief. Hier sei nur Wieland erwähnt, der meinte, der Vers sei bei aller seiner ungeschmückten Einfalt der beste . . ., den die Menschlichkeit jemals einem Dichter eingegeben hat". Obwohl er in dem Streben sowohl nach Erweiterung der vorhandenen als auch nach dem Erwerb neuer Villen (3,19) die seit dem ersten Jahrhundert v. Chr. immer stärker werdende Neigung der Römer zu ungemäßem Bauluxus - gegen den schon Horaz zu Felde zu ziehen sich aufgerufen fühlte - erkennen läßt, kann doch kein Zweifel daran sein, daß der Besitz und die Nutzung dieser Villen bei Plinius einem inneren Bedürfnis entsprachen und eine notwendige Voraussetzung für die Durchführung seiner Studien darstellten.
