FOUR AND TWENTY TOILERS represents the intersection of a pair of Golden Age greats: Edmund Evans and F. D. Bedford. When TOILERS was published, Bedford's career was at its zenith, and his "popularity rivalled that of H. R. Millar and Charles Robinson" (Dalby, 56). Evans's printing processes translated his art into book form beautifully. Cornelia Meigs praised the book's prescient subject matter and style, calling it "ahead of its time" and likening it to the work of Caldecott (401). Lovely. 9'' x 12''.
