Item Description: 1953. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Please see any and all photos connected with this listing. No Dustjacket. A bit scuffed but all pages intact and legible. Good reading copy. Clean. No store stamps. --- --- THE CASE OF THE HESITANT HOSTESS --- Book 44 in the Perry Mason series) --- Perry Mason defends a penniless ex-salesman accused of armed robbery, confident that the eyewitness testimony of a nightclub hostess will clear him, but when his star witness goes AWOL, the case takes a deadly turn. --- MURDER BY THE DAY --- Mortimer Rutherford, a millionaire with a morbid fear of dying in an inferno, has completely fireproofed his penthouse. How then was he found incinerated in his newly purchased designer armchair? A chair, that like the rest of his home, was most recently treated with a new fireproofing compound he helped develop with a chemist friend. --- THE FENCE --- HERE'S THE FIRST FEW SENTENCES --- Jim Dunn stopped his jeep on the county road under the carved sign "TREDWELL" which pointed to the new fill across the small valley. Light spring green along the creek made sharp contrast with the high mountains which formed a snow-packed, bleak horseshoe. A shelter, a protection for Aspen Valley, and a reminder that winter had retreated only a few hundred feet. . . Bookseller Inventory # 23872

You are aboard a fancy yacht full of fancy people who loathe one another. Suddenly you hear. . .A scream! A splash! A shot! The fateful cry, "Man Overboard!" And the next thing you know, you find yourself clutching a beautiful woman wearing only a flimsy nightgown. In her hands she holds a gun. That's the predicament in which Perry Mason suddenly finds himself. But that's only the beginning. Things happen speedily and this woman finds herself in a court of law accused of murder. Perry Mason is the only person in the world to believe that she is innocent. So what does the grateful woman do? She fires him. Things are not as they seem. --- DARK PROPHECY --- HERE'S THE FIRST FEW SENTENCES --- Valerie was arranging sweet peas in a bowl when Carol's letter came. The sweetpeas had been sent by Fay--cut that morning from her Sussex garden and delivered by her quiet suave chauffeur; they spilled lighthearted gaity into Valerie's rather dreary little bed-sitting-room. It seemed to her afterwards, looking back, that the whole horrible, frightening affair began with the scented gaity of sweet peas. . . Bookseller Inventory # 23873

Item Description: William Morrow, New York, 1959. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First page stamped with library stamps but the rest is in good condition. Cover has some discoloration when turned in the light. Perry Mason is a criminal defense lawyer in Los Angeles and is the hero of more than 80 novels and short stories spanning the years 1933-1973. The plot never varies; Mason takes on a case, the client is accused of murder, Mason investigates and during a trial (about half the book) finds evidence that clears the client and identifies the guilty party. Typically, to ensure his or her arrest, the client does something really stupid such as finding a body with a weapon beside it and picking up the weapon so as to be sure to leave lots of incirminating fingerprints on it. In addition to appearing to have less brains than the average person, many clients lie to Mason so that he is always ¿behind the 8 ball¿ and can only establish his client's innocence (and sometimes his own) by finding the guilty party, who confesses ¿ often at the client¿s murder trial. Mason¿s main adversaries are District Attorney Hamilton Burger, a ¿bear of a man¿, Sergeant Holcomb and Lieutenant Tragg. Neither Burger nor Holcomb ever learn from their encounters with Mason; the former because his hatred of Mason overcomes his intelligence, while Holcomb has a vicious blend of no intelligence and q hatred of Mason. Lieutenant Tragg is intelligent and never underestimates Mason; the two respect each other and work towards the same goal even if they come from different starting points.
