About this Item: Lyons, 1899. Board Portfolio. Condition: Fine. Grasset. (illustrator). Lyon: Bernoux & Cumin (1899). Folio, original paper portfolio replaced with royal blue cloth portfolio with original printed cover label describing the work laid down and original tricolor ribbons replaced; contents immaculate. One of 300 copies of this exquisite rendering of the French national anthem by one of the great Art Nouveau illustrators, Eugène Grasset. Printed title and four pictorial panels in the original mats bordered in tri-color ribbon , each measuring 13 by 9 inches, woven in fine silk with a technique based on the punch-card system used by Jacquard and following principles developed by Charles Babbage for his experimental calculating machine. According to a copy of a 1970 letter, which is included, from the curator of the Textile Museum of Lyon, the work ("ce véritable chef- d oeuvre de tissage lyonnais") is comparable to the most beautiful woven portraits of the 19th century. The first plate, the title panel, shows a fierce Marianne, personification of France, flying over a battlefield waving sword and helmet; the borders incorporate symbols of war s destruction. The second panel, with words and music woven into the fabric within a classical frame, includes a portrait of Rouget de Lisle, author of the anthem. The third and fourth panels give the remaining verses flanked by monumental figures of Victory, French soldiers and martial emblems in an architectural setting. Size: Folio. Seller Inventory # 4039

About this Item: Extravagence, lithograph designed by Eugène Grasset in 1897, published by G. de Malherbe. Size: 130 x 30 cm. From the series Dix Estampes Decoratives (caracteres de femmes, fleurs emblematiques) published in an edition 750. Eugène Samuel Grasset (1841 1917) was a Franco-Swiss decorative artist who worked in Paris, France in a variety of creative design fields during the Belle Époque. He is considered a pioneer in Art Nouveau design. He was raised in an artistic environment as the son of a cabinet designer/maker and sculptor. He studied drawing under François Bocion (1828 1890) and went to Zürich in 1861 to study architecture. He became an admirer of Japanese art, which influenced some of his designs. Between 1869 and 1870, Grasset worked as a painter and sculptor in Lausanne. He moved to Paris in 1871 where he designed furniture, fabrics and tapestries as well as ceramics and jewellery. His decorative fine art pieces were crafted from ivory, gold and other precious materials in unique combinations and his creations are considered a cornerstone of Art Nouveau motifs and patterns. In 1877 Eugène Grasset turned to graphic design, producing income-generating products such as postcards and eventually postage stamps for both France and Switzerland. However, it was poster art that quickly became his forte. Some of his works became part of the Maîtres de l'Affiche. Grasset spent much of his latter years teaching in various schools across Paris. Many of his students went on to become eminent artist themselves, unsurprisingly, a lot of them within the Art Nouveau movement. His versatility, instincts and ability not only influenced those whom he had taught, but also prominent artist like Alphonse Mucha, and left a stirring mark on the Arts and artists that followed. About this Item: Jalousie [Jealousy], lithograph designed by Eugène Grasset in 1897, published by G. de Malherbe. Size: Ø 68,5 cm. His versatility, instincts and ability not only influenced those whom he had taught, but also prominent artists like Alphonse Mucha, and left a stirring mark on the Arts and artists that followed. Seller Inventory # ABE-1508227794427

About this Item: H. Launette, Paris, 1883. Quarter Morocco. Condition: Very Good Plus. Grasset, Eugene (illustrator). Limited First Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. One of 200 unnumbered copies on Papier de Chine. Georgeous color illustrations by Grasset and printed in chromotypography by Charles Grillot. A retelling of the "Chanson de Geste" of Charlemagne and his barons, this is one of the most important and influential illustrated books of the Art Nouveau era. Ray, in the Art of French Illustration, describes the book as epochal! Gillot persuaded Grasset to furnish "Merovingian" style designs to showcase chromolithographic book illustration. As stunning as the illustrations proper is how they were woven in and incorporated into borders and set on the page. See Ray, The Art of French Illustrated Book 357, 464, 465. Ironically, Grasset himself was ambivalent about the whole process of book illustration, which he found onerous in how it forced him to confine his visual ideas to the spatial limitations of the page. His splendid results, though, were surely the product of how he approached the project. He allegedly began with the borders and worked in, sometimes augmenting these with further decoration, and others, with full illustration, and generally, elements of both. The illustrations track the story very well and indeed, the book can be read using the illustrations alone, and ignoring the text. As far as influence, one sees it clearly in the wonderful series of young adult biographies issued by Librairie Furne (the Louis', Richelieu, Napoleon, etc.), many works of Job, etc. etc. Joints rubbed. A few minor spots on brown morocco. Original wrappers bound in. Seller Inventory # 001199
