It is also the story of the constricting spiritual oppression that is the real retribution of the prisoner who cannot escape the hot tortures of his twisted mind, bent on absolving itself of any real guilt." The book's inscribee is Reverend Richard Asa Bolling (1890-1971) who served as pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, Mississippi from 1926 to 1962.
