Colophon. This book is of mixed condition: The original half-leather over maroon cloth shows much wear, with extremities rubbed through to the boards. The binding has remained strong and the interior is very good, with only one very small tear in the margin of the title page. This is an impressive work. The thing that strikes home immediately with this book, is that it is really a rather lovely book to have been produced so deep into the Second World War at this time, whilst Greece endured a terrible time under occupation. This was probably produced in very limited quantities, and Worldcat only identifies 8 library holdings worldwide. A very good paperback with card wraps - the cover is still covered in a glassine wrap which we have decided not to remove as the folded corners of the glassine inside are taped (to themselves, and not the underlying book). The text is lovely and bright, featuring many tipped in colour plates -all accounted for. A little fragile between the sewn gatherings at the spine. Nonetheless, a charming book. Contains 111 printed pages of text with tipped-in colour plates and wood water-colour drawings by the author throughout. Hand written number 428 of 1080 Limited Edition copies. A little rubbing to the edges of the fragile card covers, one small tear to the bottom corner of page 55, small fox marks to the front end papers and in Very Good clean condition. Milano, Antonio Vallardi, [1901]. Oblong folio (21.3 x 30.7 cm). Colour-printed pictorial front board and 20 lithographed plates, of which several tinted, or in one or more colours. = A very rare work in Art Nouveau or Jugendstil style, showing a wide variety of designs and letterings, e.g., for menu cards, invitations, book covers, etc. The title translates as "Modern fonts. With examples of artistic and industrial applications". The date is uncertain - one design is dated 1901. Next to nothing is known about the artist, Fortunato Perilla. A 1920 magazine records an exhibition of his works, in particular Tunisian landscape paintings, in Tunis. Antonio Vallardi was a Milanese publishing firm, active from 1843 to the 1970s. Somewhat thumbed and spotted in the lower margin of a few plates; front wrapper edges rather worn, a rear wrapper may have been issued, but is not present. Otherwise a very good copy. Neither recorded in Evers, Ornamentale Vorlagenwerke, nor in Schneider-Henn, Ornament und Dekoration.
