Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover Cloth 331 pages. Condition Fine Dust Jacket Very Good. Viking Press edition 1986. Handsome black boards and gilt embossing shows off this Clean, tight, square copy with no marks, highlights or bookplates. Book Well kept and carefully stored in unread condition. No shelf wear. Price clipped dust jacket smooth, clean and brilliant with slight shelf wear - a few wrinkles. Not an ex-library, book club or remainder copy. Albert Barnett Facey was born in 1894 in Maidstone, Victoria & grew up on the Kalgoorlie goldfields & in the wheat-belt of Western Australia. His father died before he was two. He was deserted by his mother soon afterwards. He was looked after by his grandmother until he was eight, when he went out to work. His many jobs included droving, hammering spikes on the railway line from Merredin to Wickepin & boxing in a travelling troupe. He was in the 11th Battalion at the Gallipoli landing. After the war, he became a farmer under the Soldier Settlement Scheme but was forced off the land during the Depression. He joined the tramways & was active in the Tramways Union. Having no formal education, he taught himself to read & write. Facey made the first notes of his life soon after WWI, filling notebooks with accounts of his experiences. Finally, on his children's urging, he submitted a hand-written manuscript to the Fremantle Arts Centre Press. He died in 1982, nine months after A Fortunate Life had been published to wide acclaim. "I have lived a very good life, it has been very rich & full. I have been very fortunate & I am thrilled by it when I look back."--A.B. Facey 331 pp.

Softcover (with Flaps). Condition: Very Good. Robert Juniper (illustrator). Reprint. Black-and-white photographic frontispiece showing the author as a young man in 1914. The text is illustrated with the occasional black-and-white line drawing by Robert Juniper. Colour illustrated card cover (wraparound), again by Robert Juniper, with black coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. The autobiography of Albert Facey, who, during his life started work as a parentless eight-year-old boy in the rough Western Australian frontier in the late 19th century, survived Gallipoli, lost his farm during the depression, his son during World War II, and, after 60 years of marriage his beloved wife. Yet felt his life was fortunate. Inserted loosely in the book is ephemera related to A. B. Facey:  a postcard and guide / pamphlet about Albert Facey's homestead, numerous articles relating to either the book or the author and the souvenir programme from the Melbourne Theatre Company's production of the play "A Fortunate Life" including four tickets for the performance on Wednesday, 25 July 1984. A little creasing to the book corners and browning to the textblock edges and pages. There is an adhesive sticker to the lower left hand corner of the front panel stating "Winner, 1981 New South Wales Premier's Literary Award  Non--Fiction". The free front and paper has become a little foxed and previous owners sticker to the top right hand corner of the same page. Light age toning and faint foxing to the text block edges.
