First Edition
Publisher's original black cloth with spine lettering gilt and a front panel decorative crest gilt, octavo, pp. xlv, 323. Illustrations. Short 1943 Christmas gift inscription on free front endpaper. A binding weakness is noticed in the gutter between pages xxxii and xxxiii: the netting is exposed, but cords are holding presently (see bookseller image for our best attempt at a close-up). Additionally, the book's upper board fore-edge protrudes slightly farther than lower board fore-edge, as in an overbite. There is no dust jacket as such, but the text flaps of the original dust jacket are laid in at front. Condition is GOOD, withal. For more, see Howes, F-162, s.v, Fithian, and Matthews, American Diaries Bibliography (Boston, 1959), page 103.
