Hardback. Condition: New. Over the past 20 years, Ghada Amer's quest to forge an aesthetic language for the oppression of women has established her as one of the most important and widely exhibited contemporary artists. Born in Cairo in 1963, and moving to France at age 11, from early on in life Amer was witness to the cross-cultural subjugation of women, whether from increasing religious conservatism in Egypt, or via the subtler machinations of Western commodity culture. In Amer's hand-embroidered paintings, delicate abstract tracings of sewn thread are counterposed with often quiet but sometimes confrontational erotic imagery. Trawling all manner of materials from fashion magazines, children's fairy tales, pornography, dictionaries, the Koran and medieval Arabic manuscripts, Amer challenges their authority, highlighting their exclusions and countering with a powerfully asserted female subject. This handsome monograph is the first publication to document the full breadth of her art, with numerous images of and detailed commentary on her paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, videos, performances and garden works. Art historian Maura Reilly contributes a substantial scholarly text that chronicles the trajectory of Amer's career, and art historian Laurie Farrell focuses on the artist's collaborative works with Reza Farkondeh. Also included is a conversation between the artist and scholar Martine Antle, plus a complete chronology, exhibition list and bibliography, all of which affirm this volume as the definitive resource on the artist.

Biography, Exhibition list, bibliography. Color illustrations [From Introduction] This catalog is published on the occasion of the Mortality's Alchemist solo exhibition by artist Angelo Filomeno at SCAD. Mortality's Alchemist features a selection of embroidered and hand-blown glass works made between 2006 and 2008. This beautiful and barbed collection of work provides insight into Filomeno's poetic creative vision where hints of life and overtones of death coexist.Filomeno is an artist par excellence of the 21st century. His oeuvre communicates an emotional awareness, intimacy and immediacy that rarely comes together so effectively in art. He creates works that transport us to another realm. His choice of delicate materials (hand-blown glass and embroidery in this exhibition) further accentuates overtures to the ephemeral gifts of life. Additionally, his deft blending of fractured body parts shown alongside ominous sparkling landscapes provides viewers with a melancholy space for contemplation of larger human issues. Mortality's Alchemist premiered at the Pinnacle Gallery (Jan. 7-March 15,2009) in Savannah and subsequently traveled to the Trois Gallery in Atlanta (March 23-May 31, 2009) as part of SCAD's 30-year anniversary season. Filomeno's work complements and expands SCAD's exhibitions program that is committed to artistic diversity, innovation and originality, and it provides an educational forum for current trends in contemporary art.
