Endpapers yellowing/age-stained. Binding slightly coming loose and visible between rear inner cover and whitepage. Pages yellowing. Patterned rebound Hardcover with brown cloth spine. Cover yellowing, slightly curved and slightly stained. Spine edges bumped. Sticker on spine bottom part. Felt-tip pen writing on spine. Title-page and last page edges tattered/torn and partly taped. Dedication page edges tattered - NO damage to illustration. Pen inscription on title page edge near binding. Ex-library copy with stamp on title page, pages 23, 85, 101 and under photographic plates between pages 64-65. Some pages edge slightly torn - NO damage to text. Text block scratched. Some pages bottom corner tattered and/or slightly creased. Pages browning. Internally the text and illustration pages are in very good condition. Profusely decorated with b/w drawings by Jewish illustrator Ephraim Moses Lilien (1874-1925), an early active Zionist. This book was one of his earliest important commissions, but the fullness of his talent is already evident. Text in German. Wonderful B&W. Black, silver and gold designs on front and back covers. This is an early edition of the German translation of Rosenfeld's Yiddish poems originally published in Yiddish in 1898. Printing year not certain. About this Item: Juedischer Verlag, Berlin, 1903. Hardcover. Condition: fair. First edition. Quarto. Modern red leatherette. Marbled endpapers. Original wrappers bound in. Allegorical frontispiece by E. M. Lilien. Illustrated head-chapter. Scarce first edition of this gruesome account of the Kishinev pogrom which took place on April 19-20, 1903 (April 6-7, 1903 O.S.). It started after the Christian population got out of Church on Easter Sunday. It spanned three days of rioting against the Jews. 47 (some put the figure at 49) Jews were killed, 92 severely wounded, 500 slightly wounded and over 700 houses and many businesses looted and destroyed. This work is illustrated with 4 b/w photographic reproductions. Original front wrap party taped at rear with book repair tape (not a cellophane tape) as well as lower inner margin of frontispiece (not affecting image). Title page bound between pages 14 and 15, with lower margin missing and replaced by transparent paper. Pages age-toned throughout. Modern binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in fair to good condition. Seller Inventory # 34429
