About this Item: Amsterdam. 1639 or later., 1639. This map, as well as the virtually identical Blaeu map that first appeared ca. 1638, are based upon the Mercator/Hondius map of the same area from 1606. Both the Blaeu and Jansson maps made additions to the Mercator/Hondius mapping, making these the most accurate maps of the Southeast yet to appear. Among the improvements are a much more accurate portrayal of Chesapeake Bay and the apparent first appearence of Newport News ("Newport nesa") on a printed map. Cumming, The Southeast in Early Maps: 42. Burden, The Mapping of North America: 254. Outline color with colored cartouche and scale. Fully remargined. Minor discoloration, primarily confined to top margin. Overall, an attractive example. 15 1/4 x 19 3/4.". Seller Inventory # 2286
